Hugh Jackman Finally Admits Some X-MEN Movies Sucked

The X-Men franchise gets a pretty bad rap from fans, although recently it’s been in their favour thanks to a string of successes since 2011. Funnily enough, there have only been two “terrible” flicks – The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, compared to all the great ones like the first two movies, First Class, The Wolverine and Days of Future Past (Deadpool will hopefully join that list). However, the negativity has so far come from we basement-dwellers rather than the stars and crew themselves – it’s unlikely that they do, however it’s still happened. Now, one of the leading figures in the mutant world has stepped out to offer up some criticism for the film series – Hugh Jackman!

Chatting with The Guardian about Pan (what an aptly-named title – ha, I’m glad I came up with that joke before anyone else!), talk inevitably turned to Wolverine 3, which will be Jackman’s final appearance in the role. In it, he confirmed what we all knew: he thinks some of the movies sucked too.

“I … I don’t think all the X-Men and Wolverines have been great, and I’m not going to pretend … the intention was always there and everyone worked super-hard and all of that. I do think we’re in a really great place with the character. This next one, from what I’m hearing, is going to be fantastic. I would love to go out where I felt we were really doing something new and interesting and valid, and I don’t know how much longer I can contribute to that. I’m sure there are other people who can.”

Obviously he’s not gonna say which ones, but I think it’s pretty clear he’s talking about those infamous two films.

It’s certainly a very interesting and unique franchise, in that Fox pretty much just did whatever the hell they wanted to do. We had a normal trilogy, then they tried to do a prequel series and failed, then they tried to do another prequel series and turned it into a reboot, and now we’re getting another prequel and some more solo movies. There’s been no clear structure. That may be why I’m not as big a fan of the series as others – the only ones I really like are First Class and Days of Future Past, although I’ve learned to appreciate X2 in recent years. Fortunately, Apocalypse should be great (looking like Ivan Ooze aside), Deadpool looks fucking awesome, and everything he’s said about Wolverine 3 has made my little fanboy heart do a dance.
