Elephantmen 56 preview 455x700 Elephantmen #56Elephantmen #56 is a one shot focusing on the Zebra police officer. It doesn’t offer anything on the main storyline, but that doesn’t necessarily make it a bad issue, right?

The official description from Image:

“BLOOD AND SAND”

SHAKY KANE returns to ELEPHANTMEN to tell a chilling story of the L.A.P.D’s Lieutenant Trench.

This is a stand alone issue that I feel you’re going to love or hate. It pushes itself in a very strong direction both emotionally and visually and it isn’t one that will suit everyone. The hallmarks are all there, but under the cover this issue doesn’t just feel like Elephantmen. Indeed, the title has had much better examples.

The main story itself has some merits, even if it doesn’t instantly grip you as a reader. Richard Starkings is credited with the script and Mark Schweikert is credited with the story itself, so where any individual fault lies is hard to say. However, the issue as a whole does a poor job in capturing the character of Trench. He comes across as somewhere between dull and cold. While the opening monologue certainly has some character and depth, but it doesn’t contrast well with the second half. I get the thematic elements at work here, but it isn’t held together as well as it could be.

Visually, Shaky Kane’s art style will set audiences apart. Many people like their Elephantmen dark and atmospheric, especially in issues such as this where it plays heavily with film noir and other genres related to the ‘one good cop in a big bad city’ trope. A flat yet oh-so-vibrant approach to color, however, loses this message within its blur of bright, blocky artwork. The lack of detail removes any impact from dead bodies or anything else that would serve as a shocking moment.

All in all, I feel this issue could be a lot, lot more. It’s clear what the creative team was going for, but this ultimately feels like an experimental filler issue between larger pieces of work.

Pariah 3 alternative Pariah #3 ReviewPariah #3 continues to offer a unique futuristic setting with plenty of themes that hit close to home. If you’re a fan of the first two issues, I see no reason why Pariah #3 would change your mind.

The official description from Dark Horse:

The last Vitro on Earth devises a plan to cut off government control of the Vitro satellite in order to free his comrades in space.

This issue changes the perspective to someone on Earth, which makes for an interesting change of pace. The first two issues have established the setting, so Pariah #3 takes the opportunity to dive a little further in and explore some new areas. That said, it manages to stay highly relevant to the main story line and stays engaging and exciting at all times, offering a well-told start and an all-important cliffhanger at the end.

Philip Gelatt and Aron Warner clearly get the themes of their own story and know how to make them relate to ideas we understand. Despite being futuristic, Gelatt relates the Vitro and Humans to a sense of ‘us and them’. The lack of indifference feels familiar, making the characters feel all the more human and alive. It never strays too far into fantasy and ensures the writing has a much more personal impact and it comes off all the more better for it.

Visually, Brett Weldele has a distinct title that holds up well. His style may be a little loose but Pariah #3 doesn’t skip on detail and reads smoothly from panel to panel. My only gripe is the choice of color. On a second read-through, the constant use of blue and orange becomes all the more obvious.

All in all, this is a very strong third issue. The plot moves at a decent enough pace, the title is visually appealing and there’s a lot to soak in from start to finish. In other words, I’m highly awaiting the fourth issue.

G.I Joe 15 460x700 G.I Joe #15 ReviewIt looks like this could be the last issue of the current series for a while so, if it is an impromptu end, how does G.I Joe #15 wrap things up?

The official description from IDW:

THE SEARCH FOR SIREN! The G.I. Joe team is on the hunt for the mysterious COBRA operative codenamed SIREN—but is her song luring them to their doom?

It’s a tense enough issue and definitely full of action, but it might be going a bit too fast. There are small arcs and developments that get crammed into this space. Hashtag, for instance, doesn’t get enough time to develop and the twists and turns of this issue feel as if two or three issues were pushed into one. I’m not saying the end result isn’t enjoyable – it’s definitely a thrill ride of tense action – but the end note is a bit sour. After all the action, G.I Joe #15 ends on a very sad, anti-climatic conclusion.

I’m not saying Paul Allor doesn’t try, but after taking a slow issue to get to this point, his script barrels through the relevant processes to get to this ending. As I said, the choice of ending is questionable and while I prefer it to something that is overoptimistic and perfect, it’s message and themes are a little too dark for this title.

Visually, this issue looks as strong as the series ever has. Steve Kurth can draw plenty of fluid action scenes. Even when it comes to small, crowded panels, he doesn’t let up and the quality always ensures a dynamic read from page to page. Throw in some vibrant colors from Joana Lafuente and you have an issue that at least looks as strong and great as the rest of G.I Joe.

In closing, I don’t mind this issue, but it’s not a way to end something. Both Cobra Files and Special Missions before it ended on dry, ambiguous notes and going for the depressing hat trick isn’t an achievement to be proud of.

Transformers More Than Meets The Eye 28 variant 461x700 Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #28I’ve read some Transformers in my time, but I’ve never seen Megatron as an Autobot. I guess Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #28 is going to change that one.

The official description from IDW:

CERTAIN DEATH, HERE WE COME! MEGATRON assumes control of the quest to find the Knights of Cybertron—a quest that has never before been so urgent, so personal, and so likely to end in tears. An incredulous Lost Light crew is left asking the same thing you are: how exactly did it come to this?

I have to admit, I had my doubts coming into this one, but More Than Meets The Eye #28 has a lot going for it. The issue bounces between the present and the aftermath of Dark Cybertron, showing more of the events hinted at in Robots In Disguise. It still doesn’t reveal everything – and I’m not sure I agree with that – but it does set-up an interesting premise. With obvious inclusions such as Megatron, and the absence of Rodimus, the lineup has changed a little but it seems to use this to its advantage.

James Roberts has, on occasion, shown some great understanding for the cast and that is certainly true here. Aside from Megatron, some of the background characters get a better focus here and Roberts goes to great efforts to ensure previous key events aren’t forgotten. I have to praise him for making Chromedome more important than he was in Dark Cybertron and getting back to his personal arc and grievances. It’s touches like this that make More Than Meets The Eye great. It also has touches of its trademark humor as well.

Visually, the issue makes a grand return to the art style most of us are use to. Alex Milne has an eye for detail, with many of the larger panels giving way to some beautiful pencil work on some of the larger, more complex characters. While it’s not vibrant, I’ve always had a soft spot for the colorful, pastel tones of Josh Burcham. Even if it doesn’t completely feel like the old title, More Than Meets The Eye #28 certainly looks the part.

All in all, this is a welcome return to form. While it might not completely sell me on the changes right now, it’s doing more than a good enough job in making me stick around to find out more.

2000ad 1879 2000AD #1879 ReviewWell, it wouldn’t be a week of comics without 2000AD. Inside 2000AD #1879 we have Judge Dredd, Outlier, Slaine, Sinister Dexter and Jaegir. Let’s take a closer look.

First up is Judge Dredd with the start of a new story by John Wagner. Wagner shapes the story well and, as usual, has a certain way of writing Dredd, offering a naration that gets to the heart of the stone cold character. Combine this with some beautiful visuals from John McCrea and this is going to be a very atmospheric and rewarding plot.

Next up is more Outlier. T.C Eglington really delves into the plot here, setting up the many twists and turns that give way to the action. This issue might seem slow, but it more than makes up for it in what it promises. Visually, Karl Richardson’s art offers color where its needed and darkness where it helps, adding to the tension.

After this is the continuation of Slaine by Pat Mills. Mills opens up with action, tension and everything else in between. This issue really seems to set-up the next act, while Simon Davis offers some simply beautiful visuals in the mean while.

This is followed by the end of the current Sinister Dexter arc. Given the nature of this title, it’s no surprise Dan Abnett chooses to end things with a bang. In true Sinister Dexter fashion, this issue has its share of blood and explosions. Smudge’s artwork does its best, but this issue could really benefit from some color.

Finally, we round this issue off with the end of Jaegir. Gordon Rennie ends things on an action-packed note, but makes sure to add a sense of character and closure. Simon Coleby offers some decent art work to add weight to the script, making for an all-round satisfying ending.

The great book gets explored more in the comic book world in this new series but is it worth reading? Read on to find out more.

When a sniper’s bullet kills the pro-peace Speaker of the House and a terrorist vampire cell takes credit, the Vampire War erupts hotter and bloodier than ever. Join IDW and New York Times best-selling author,Jonathan Maberry, as we take you on a non-stop thrill ride of action, horror and suspense! Welcome to the V-WARS!

If you didn’t know much about V-Wars, here is some fun facts. V-Wars was actually a boo3791522 01 ria 461x700 V Wars #1 Reviewk, that deals with mankind against a plague of Vampires but they are not you sparkling kind. They are your throat tearing and ass kicking vampires. It is a great book, that this series delves into that world. The one nice thing about this story is that it is quick and to the point, which is what I was expecting from the writer. It starts with a head of the government getting shot and it sets into motion the big war that will determine who will survive, which is something that I can’t say is looking good for the human race. It is really good.

The writing is just right on. I mean it is quick and fast and gets to the point. There is no down time and it will make you want the next issue now, which is always a good thing. The only thing I will say isn’t great is that you don’t have much time to see the characters that you will be following but again this is the first issue, so we shall see.

The art is full of blood and gore and doesn’t shy away from showing the gross stuff. It is awesome if you’re a fan of horror.

The V-Wars are starting fierce and fast and that’s the way it should be.

Welcome to Crimeland! Dredd’s mission brings him to the West Coast’s most exciting vacation spot, a theme park dedicated to old-fashioned street crime, singing animated creatures, and total anarchy! But he and his film crew find more than they counted on there—including a rogue Judge who gave up the law to serve the people!

The world of Mega City Two has become something quite special in all the worse ways possible and you know JDredd MC 04 pr 3 1ccb7 455x700 Judge Dredd: Mega City Two #4 ReviewDredd can only take so much before he get crazy. Well, things get even crazier in this issue because of the whole Crimeland. Crimeland is something of an amusement park that glorifies crime and is something that I would think that Dredd would hate and he does. The nice thing about this issue, is that we really have some great moments of delving into the secrets of Mega City Two because there is something that is revealed by the new rogue Judge that will make you wonder how big Mega City Two goes. I loved it. It was perfect and you will love it too.

The writing for this issue has been right on. The reveals and attention to detail is just really cool. The one nice thing is the imagination that this story has. I mean everything has a point to it and there is something revealed under each new are that is explored, they are just fantastic.

The art is, also, is very cool. The attention to detail and the way that if you look really hard, you will some great easter eggs that will make you smile because they hint to something in our world. It is just great.

Mega City Two develops and keeps the pace of a great comic book.

If you’re looking for a new title with hints of Sandman and small does of Inception, then Dream Police might be made just for you. And so far, it’s good.

Here’s the official word from Image:

Dream Police Detectives Joe Thursday and Frank Stanford have been partners for as long as they can remember, patrolling the alternate universe of dreams, nightmares, and the great void beyond, an alternate but very real dimension of changelings, echoes, wisps, ethers, and nightwalkers, those who died in their sleep and wander the dreamscape forever. They’ve seen it all. But when Frank steps away and disappears…and the woman who returns says she’s Joe’s partner, that she’s always been Joe’s partner…he begins a journey into the unknown that will shake the dreaming down to its very foundations.

I’ll be honest: if it wasn’t for the fact that Dream Police was written by J. Michael Straczynski I never DreamPolice01 Cover 2caac 455x700 Dream Police #1: Reviewwould’ve picked this thing up. First off, it’s not the most inventive premise in the world — a parallel universe that dreamers visit when in slumber is something that’s been done ad nauseam, either in discrete one-shots or, most beautifully and notably, with Gaiman’s Sandman. But — and here’s the “but” that might make you spend three bucks this week — it’s written by one of the most creative writers in the industry. So even if the premise made my eyes roll, I knew the writing wouldn’t. And so far, with issue #1, Straczynski’s execution has been masterful. The players (two folksy cops assigned to patrol a dreamscape that seems to have an uneasy truce with the world of nightmares) are introduced elegantly; the action rolls out organically; and the universe Straczynski has built is compelling.

The art, by Sid Kotian, is fun but not stunning. Kotain is clearly enjoying the task of creating panels that invoke the oddity of dreams — an ever shifting reality where someone can be eating Thai food one moment and eyeballs the next. And while I immensely enjoyed his work, there hasn’t been, as of yet, a real moment for him to shine.

Dream Police #1 is an excellent example of how to launch a run — it’s story first, and premise second. And I can’t wait to read the next issue.

The last few issues of the X-Files have offered hardcore fans ample opportunity to geek-out, allowing us to revisit some of the show’s greatest hits — first there was Flukeman, then The Smoking Man, and now, with issue #11, the infamous Black Oil.

Here’s the official word from IDW:

The shifting sands of Saudi Arabia have attracted pilgrims, consumed armies, and made men rich beyond their wildest dreams. But when an ancient weapon is discovered beneath a newly tapped oil field, Agents Mulder and Scully find themselves pulled back into a black game as slippery as the X-Files have ever revealed… and you won’t believe who’s turning up to join them.

There’s nothing like the first issue of a new story arc to get fans all excited. Like the first few weeks of a new Xfiles s10 11 pr 1 66357 455x700 X Files: Season 10, #11 Reviewrelationship, the first installment of a new arc is full of promise, wonder, and innuendo. And with issue #11 of X-Files: Season 10, that’s exactly what writer Joe Harris is offering us in spades. After a terrorist attack in Saudi Arabia, Mulder and Scully are dispatched to the Middle East on what appears to be their first non-X-Files case in…well, forever. And while the course of their investigation reveals a deposit of Black Oil, the biggest oddity it uncovers has to do with alternate realities, or time travel, or maybe both — who knows?! As with any new arc, this issue raises more questions than answers, but so far the questions are delicious and my eternal hope is that Harris is able to deliver the second act of this story as deftly as he did the first. In short: we don’t want to follow-up a great first date with a lousy one. But so far, this arc is magic.

Matthew Dow Smith provides some wonderful art here — his hand is sketchy, but detailed, and he captures the paramilitary feel of Mulder navigating an alley shoot-out with a sense of realism some of his early counterparts have struggled to achieve. The FBI is, after all, an armed branch of the government and it’s easy to forget that guns might be occasionally involved.

Overall, X-Files #11 is a joy to read. Go grab this thing today.

The newest 80′s throwback comic book, is coming to a sad part of the series, with some self discovery and more. Read on to find out.

In this action-packed third issue, Vandroid gets personal! An all-out brawl with the Mighty Oak Biker Club has Vandroid discovering who he really is . . . and it’s not what he expected. But when his best friend is in danger, will Vandroid be able to withstand the brutal experimentation of the R&D Gang, or will he become a wiped motherboard?

Okay, so this whole series has been fun and exciting and more, however, there are some real moments in this issue that adds a 24230 455x700 Vandroid #3 Reviewwhole new dynamic to Vandroid. In this issue, our hero, was just trollying along but then a ruthless biker gang and tries to destroy our hero. The one thing that really hits hard in this issue, is how Vandroid discovers who he is, and what that means for our hero. It is something that isn’t what you would expect and how it happens is so perfect and quick that you will be like “Wow”. I love it. This issue does take itself a little too seriously but it does keep some of the 80′s fun, which is a positive.

The writing for this issue is very good. Like I said, there are some real serious moments but it goes right back into the fun and excitement that this comic has been the whole time. It is well worth the read.

The art is just great too. It gives us the emotional side of the story, but, also, there are some retro colors and neat details that really feel like that throwback, you always wanted. You will really enjoy this issue quite thoroughly, just like I did.

Vandroid is very fun and exciting but does get a little more serious than the other issues.

With a great new suit, comes a great responsibility. Okay, that doesn’t sound near as good but seriously, find out what happens when a super suit is given. Read on to find out more.

Scott Travers’s mysterious suit grants him unseen, unlimited access to almost anywhere and may hold the key to his benefactor’s disappearance. But others will do anything—including kill—to possess the suit. Will Scott give up the search and ditch the suit to save his own skin?

This series is turning to be a very interesting take on the superhero world. So the last time that we were with our new hero, Scott,blackout2p3 461x700 Blackout #2 Review he received a suit that brings out some of the coolest powers and it just is so cool. Now, Scott, is on the hunt for the mysterious benefactor of the suit. It is a mystery that is delved into a lot more but not in the way that you would think. There are some bad people in this world and they want the power that the suit has. It is really cool to see how Scott deals with these things and he ends up making a tough decision about his new found powers. There is one criticism that I have. The way that the comic is coming up, it doesn’t make Scott super likable, yet. He isn’t your run of the mill hero, which is nice, but I haven’t fallen in love with him, yet. I hope that changes.

The, overall, writing for this issue is very well done. There is a clear beginning, middle, and end that the writer wants you to follow that reveals some things but not too much.

The art is just fantastic. It is dark and fun. There are some really good uses of the colors, especially in a awesome blackout.

Blackout is an interesting take on the super suit story but I am not sold on the main character, yet.

As the spring anime season enters the halfway point, we here at UTF have taken on the daunting task of recommending five shows this season that show off just what the Spring Season has to offer. This isn’t a “Top 5″ list, just recommendations in case you are still having trouble figuring out what to watch this season. Let’s get started.

Why You Should Be Watching: Aside from some exciting giant robot fighting action. Captain Earth has some heart and weight underneath it as Daichi reconnects with old friends and tries to follow in his father’s footsteps as he learns more about the Kill-T-Gang.

Black Bullet

Black Bullet anime 2014 590x311 5 Spring Anime You Should Be Watching

Studio: Kinema Citrus

Where to watch: Crunchyroll

What is about: In the year 2021 mankind is nearly eradicated by a parasitic virus known as Gastrea. Forced to live behind monoliths, humanity fights back with the help of Civil Secrurities, an agency formed to stop Gastrea outbreaks by utilizing Initiators, “cursed” female children born with the Gastrea virus, and Promoters, normal humans selected to lead the children. Rentaro Satomi, a Promoter, is selected for a secret mission along with Initiator, Enju Aihara in order to stop a madman’s plot to wipe out humanity for good.

Why you should be watching: Fans of last years hit Attack on Titan, will find something to like about Black Bullet. The show have similar feels to them, what with humanity being pushed behind man made walls from an unearthly threat that only a select few with connections to the threat can stop. Although that is where the similarities stop for the most part as Black Bullet is not afraid to have a sense of humor about itself and way less melodramatic, projecting a fun but at the same time dangerous vibe.

Nanana’s Buried Treasure

stacks image 4675 5 Spring Anime You Should Be Watching

Studio: A-1 Pictures

Think of it as DBZ, if almost every character was in the Ginyu Force. Poses, other the top action, poses, over dramatic explanations, POSES (seriously the characters here pose and posture like their on the cover of Vogue). If you like your shonen with just a bit of cheese, and music references, Stardust Crusaders is for you.

Will this origin story be worth of the captivating character that is Number Six? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Don’t miss this exciting chapter in Battlestar Galactica lore as the early origins of Number Six are explored. In developing the next generation of Cylons, getting the models to look human was the easy part. But acting human is another story. Witness the evolution of Number Six as she learns live, to love, and to hate.

Battlestar Galactica Six 1 variant BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: SIX #1 ReviewNumber Six was one of the most enigmatic characters to be introduced during the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica series and I for one am happy that Dynamite have finally given an origin story for her. This tale goes into Six’ life prior to the show teasing at what made her into the emotionless character we all know.

J. T. Krul does a fantastic job of the script for this issue giving a different look to Number Six. The delicate way that he handles her background is something to commend as a lot of writers come into well known series and either over think or under think origins for said series. Krul on the other hand manages to give enough to grab the readers attention whilst also keeping an aura of mystery to the character. On top of this he also gives us some exciting and impactful sequences and give what Krul has produced here I can see Number Six becoming more intense and spontaneous as the series progresses.

Igor Kima kills it on the artwork with his realistic style being astonishing. The detail and layout of his art also prove to be eye catching as though there’s the odd imperfection the overall finish is outstanding. I especially love how Kima uses the inks with it giving definition when needed as well as being subtle elsewhere. He also manages to capture the mood of Krul’s story perfectly with the character emotion practically oozing off the page. Alex Guimarães colours were also sensational as bar giving a fantastic finish they also managed to add a intense overtone to the story.

Battlestar Galactica: Six gets off to a solid start with the origin of Six being truly intriguing. Highly recommended.

Last issue of Black Science kicked into high gear as the action intensifies and Black Science #6 is the blast off into hyper drive. Writer Rick Remender hits a stride that shifts the story into a whole other dimension with a shocking and surprising ending.

Official description from IMAGE:
Stranded in the most dangerous dimension yet, Grant McKay’s rage at his onetime boss boils over. Ignoring the chaos all around them, the two finally come to blows! Only one thing is certain: before the Pillar makes its next jump… one of them must die! Don’t miss the conclusion to the first arc of the world’s most mind-melting sci-fi comic!

Black Science has been classic Remender story arc as the first four issues had plenty of excitement but it was just the appetizer to the meal. Now at issue six everything is turned on it’s head and what starts off as an act from Grant to defend and protect his family, all while stopping Kadir, who represents the true evil in his eyes. Remender continues to wrap, what’s essentially an action adventure story, in an elaborate and imaginative backdrop of science-fiction alien worlds. Grant and Kadir are so wrapped up in their fight that the aliens who are on the defensive feel much like bit players. But, as always, Remender has a plan to put the alien world and it’s technology front and center.

BlackScience06 CVR Black Science #6 ReviewThe fight itself is the meat of the issue but by the end, roles change, alliances are shattered and emotions are at an all-time high. This is the point when all the other members of Grant’s team find out who they are and what their roles will become as they try to get home. The tension draws out their strengths to be leaders as their beliefs in each other slowly erode. Remender’s gut shot at the end is a strong punctuation on what readers feel should happen and how justice is finally delivered. By the end you’ll be as stunned and confused on what you believe and who you trust.

The new sci-fi elements that Remender tosses into the mix are both alien, oddly relatable and outright mysterious. It’s those simple fantastical touches that Remender knows how to write so well and launch the story into old-school classical sci-fi world he’s so masterful at designing. Artist Matteo Scalera’s work is so meticulous and gorgeous that you can feel the energy on  each page. One of Scalera’s gift is creating exciting motion and action from a static image. From his work here and, heart pounding work on Dead Body Road, he solidifies himself as a master of action and excitement. Chase scenes have been prevalent in Black Science from the beginning and no one brings it to life more than Scalera. It’s simply a masterful piece of work, not only here, but through the entire run of Black Science.

I can’t help gushing about the magnificent strides and progressions Remender brings to this story. It’s action-packed, heartfelt, emotional and unleashed sci-fi mayhem. The relationships that are built and destroyed by the teams travels through dimension and time will keep you guessing what’s around each corner, which is the best part of this ride Remender has created. Black Science is an incredibly well thought out adventure with rich characters fans of sci-fi, drama, and action can all get on board. Issue #6 is the pinnacle of change for the story and for all the characters involved and a perfect ending to the story’s first full arc. Black Science is magically story-telling from both Remender and Scalera which every comic book fan should take a chance on because you will not be disappointed.

Commander Adama has an important decision, but just how will this affect the Galactca? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

To escape from the Cylon mainforce chasing them, the human survivors must run and run hard… but that will mean leaving a chunk of the fleet behind. Commander Adama is not prepared to make that sacrifice, because of the terrible risks. He has one chance to prove his laurels as the greatest Battlestar commander in the 12 Colonies. Awesome, space-shaking space-battle action and edge of the seat tension from cosmic superstar writer Dan Abnett!

Battlestar Galactica 10 variant Battlestar Galactica #10 ReviewBattlestar Galactica is a franchise that most sci-fi fans will know as whether it’s the original (which this comics based on) you prefer or the re-imagined version from 2004 one thing that remains the same is the overall high quality. I unfortunately can’t say the same about this comic as though it’s good it’s far from amazing.

Dan Abnett is a well known name in the cosmic community having had a brilliant run on Guardians of the Galaxy as well as having produced some outstanding Warhammer novels. It’s this that made me believe that he’d be the perfect man to handle a Battlestar Galactica adaptation and though this is only the first issue I’ve read I haven’t really seen anything to back this up. Despite this not being his best work Abnett does give us some fantastic character interaction as well as some intriguing developments and with a little work this new story could easily become very good.

The art on this issue is from Cezar Razek who’s been working on the series since it started last year. Honestly there’s very little to dislike about Razek’s art as though the facial expressions aren’t the smoothest the overall layout and detail is to a high standard. He also uses the space well as though the lack of background and scenery may disappoint some I personally felt it allowed certain emotions to stand out more. The art is also rounded off nicely with brilliant inks from Razek and deep colours from Vincius Townsend that match Dynamite’s general colour style.

Battlestar Galactica isn’t a terrible series but as a fan of both series I have to say I wasn’t overly impressed. Despite this it did do enough to merit a recommendation.

Valiant’s new book Rai, about Japan in the year 4001 with an omnipresent A.I. leader and a folk legend as protector, takes flight. Matt Kindt and Clayton Crain deliver a story that’s sure to be a winner.

Official description from IMAGE:
The year is 4001 A.D. – led by the artificial intelligence called ‘Father,’ the island nation of Japan has expanded out of the Pacific and into geosynchronous orbit with the ravaged Earth below. With billions to feed and protect, it has fallen to one solitary guardian to enforce the law of Father’s empire – the mysterious folk hero known as Rai. They say he can appear out of nowhere. They say he is a spirit, the ghost of Japan. But when the first murder in a thousand years threatens to topple Father’s benevolent reign, Rai will be forced to confront the true face of a nation transformed, and his own long-lost humanity!

Kindt tackles Valiant’s new title Rai and from the very beginning it will grab hold of you. The world Kindt creates is dense and suffocating, dark and septic but strangely beautiful. The story kicks off in high gear as two men are on the run to dump a body and the results begins a series of violent deaths which catches the attention of the all-seeing “Father.” While only known as Japan’s unchallenged leader, his presence is as mysterious as it is powerful. Kindt begins the legend of Rai through the eyes and exposition of a young girl Lula. She is our first understanding of who Rai is and she lays out the myth and legend attributed to his rarely seen presence. She also lays out the types of characters in this future Japan with names like  “raddies, fish-eyes and PT’s.” The announcement of the first death in Japan in a thousand years brings Lula’s excitement to a fever pitch at the mere chance she will witness Rai in action and spells out for readers what lies ahead.

RAI 001 COVER Rai #1 ReviewThere is a ton of exposition here, as Kindt must set-up this elaborate new Japan, but does so without sounding like a tour guide. What could be boring and dry is used in a way that it fit’s this heavily populated world, is necessary to set the stage and comes off as anything but boring. It brings Japan to life as Kindt crawls readers through all the nooks and crannies. Readers first glimpse of Rai is shrouded in old-world beauty, which only builds his myth. Once Rai does fully appear it’s during an intervention between lovers and haters of future technology and it’s a splashy, well crafted entrance. The action is non-stop after that as many new rebellions begin to raise their ugly head among Rai’s protection and investigation.

Crain’s digitally painted art is off-the-charts in here. He solidifies the dense world Kindt has laid out with an equally crushing sense feel claustrophobia and darkness. He also integrates classic Asian sensibilities with intricately detailed weapons, machines, and robots that blends a mix old-world style and classic sci-fi reminiscent of something out of Blade Runner. The style is unique with overlapping panels that plays right into the crowded feeling of new Japan plus only hints and mere minor touches similar to steampunk. But this is an all new world that is distinct is it’s design and execution.

Kindt doesn’t spend too much time, after Rai’s appearance, on step-up and throws readers right in to the chaos and confusion. Rai is multi-faceted with plenty of action, drama, mystery and detective story highlight by Valiant’s layered and diverse new hero. Throwing in Lula, who’s own obsession to see Rai drives the more human element in Japan, but helps ground the book without being too sappy or sidekick oriented. When new Japan is reveled in the end it comes as a shock to the extent of changes in this future.

Valiant has a hit on their hands and Kindt and Crain make a perfect team to tell Rai’s story. It’s exceeds all expectations and will have you glued to the pages as you read. If this is the beginning of the “Valiant First” initiate then it’s off to a great start. Rai is possibly the best new indie title to come along this year.

It’s finally happened. This isn’t a last minute April Fools gag. After months of speculation, rumors and thoughts on who will be involved, Lucasfilm has finally revealed the cast of Star Wars Episode VII, the first entry in the new sequel trilogy.

The new cast will be comprised of John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow. They will join Original Trilogy stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker. Guys, that’s two whole women in the main cast. This is groundbreaking for a Star Wars movie! (Update: The Hollywood Reporter has sources stating there’s another female part that has yet to be filled. Perhaps it’s Lutpita Nyong’o?)

Director J.J. Abrams expressed his excitement about the cast, stating, “We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”

star wars episode 7 cast announce 590x335 The Wait Is Over! Lucasfilm Announces STAR WARS EPISODE VII Cast

Several of these actors were rumored heavily, most notably Adam Driver and more recently Oscar Issac. However, the biggest name that jumps out is Andy Serkis. Well-known for his performances as Gollum, King Kong and Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Serkis’ work in motion capture has been well-recevied over the years. Though it’s possible he may be in a regular live-action role, it’s a safe bet that Lucasfilm brought him on to bring some elaborate alien character to life.

This is quite a diverse cast. Isaac recently appeared in the multiple-award nominated Inside Llewyn Davis, Gleeson played Bill Weasley in the final two Harry Potter films and Max von Sydow is a legend in the acting world (we here at UTF know him best as Ming the Merciless in 1980′s Flash Gordon). I’m liking what I see so far, and hopefully this cast will leave a better legacy than most of the prequel actors did.

As for the Original Trilogy cast, there’s no surprises there…except one. Where’s my man Billy Dee Williams?!?! We want Lando!

Will the crew of the Serenity have to find a new ship? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

With help from the New Resistance, Mal and Serenity’s crew are crashing the secret Alliance facility from which River was rescued. She is certain they need to go there—now. Meanwhile, Zoe is in Alliance custody where she discovers that there is more immediate danger from fellow prisoners than anyone else . . .

Serenity Leaves on the Wind 4 variant Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #4 ReviewSerenity: Leaves on the Wind has so far been an excellent continuation from the film as though most Firefly fans would probably agree that a live action return is more wanted, the comic media is the next best thing. This issue does in particular does a fantastic job of following on from last issues surprise character addition and I’m loving seeing the reaction from the Serenity crew members to the Operative.

Zack Whedon has probably produced the best issue of this series yet with the dynamic flow and enthralling developments having me hooked to every page. The way that he utilises these much loved characters is simply amazing showing a brilliant understanding for his brother Joss Whedon‘ creations. The thing that I loved the most however was the constant suspense as whether it was the question of whether to trust the Operative, Zoe’s ordeals or the intense cliffhanger ending it constantly had me gripped.

The artwork is also once again outstanding with Georges Jeanty‘s charming style being awe-inspiring. The way that he captures the overall essence of Whedon’s story is phenomenal with the character’s facial expressions adding the kind of tension and emotion that I loved from the TV series. Jeanty also grabs the readers attention firmly through his layouts which are both smooth and enticing. Add to this Karl Story‘s spectacular inks and Laura Martin‘s fantastic colours and we get a series that is both visually stunning and gripping.

Serenity: Leaves on the Wind continues to be a great continuation from the film and a must have for any Firefly fan. Highly recommended.

How will Honor’s impossible mission go? Read on to find out.

The official description from Top Cow:

THE HONORVERSE EXPANDS TO COMICS! Based on the bestselling military science fiction novels by David Weber, this original comic book series continues the story of Honor Harrington as she investigates the threat to Basilisk Station by the Republic of Haven. This series is part of a new multi-platform story world that includes a mobile game app to be released with the first issue and a feature film currently in development.

Tales of Honor 2 variant Tales of Honor #2 ReviewTales of Honor got off to a great start being the perfect introduction to the Honorverse. Following up from this we’ve had to wait a few weeks longer than initially expected with it now being almost two months since #1 was released. This however doesn’t bother me as we manage to get a strong continuation to this fascinating series.

Matt Hawkins scripts rarely fail to disappoint with his attention to detail being one of the things that make him such a fabulous writer. His narrations along with character development has always amazes me and now that he’s taken on David Weber’s Honor character he has the responsibility of someone else’s creation. He does however do Weber proud as though I yet to read the novels I am already captivated by this character. Despite this there was a part of me that felt that there was a little too much going on for one issue. Hawkins has stated many times that he likes given readers value for money and though this is something I commend him for there is a negative side to this as it can sometimes hinder the flow of the story.

Jung-Guen Yoon‘s painted art is once again phenomenal being perfectly suited to this sci-fi romp. His sleek detailed pencils and subtle inks make this an eye catching series as though story is always key comics have to also be visually appealing. He also gives intense layouts and brilliant character emotions with it all adding to the overall depth. Despite all this it remains his wonderful colours that captivate me the most with them being very sleek and realistic.

Tales of Honor continues to be a stunning sci-fi series as despite there being a delay with it’s release it was certainly well worth the wait. Highly recommended.

The official description from Image:

“CHASING SHADOWS” THE CONCLUSION TO BOOK ONE! Rascal runs from the Redguard’s clutches—but it will cost her more than she can imagine! Where can she go? Who can she trust? Are you sure? Because nothing seems certain any more. And by the end of this issue, nobody will be above suspicion!

Umbral06 Page1 Umbral #6 ReviewThe first arc of Umbral finally comes to an end, and boy does it do so in a magnificent way. Over the course of this first story I have had mixed opinions on Umbral as though overall it’s been fairly positive there have been times when I’ve questioned where the series was heading. Gladly however it ends in a clever and intriguing fashion that gives clarity to this first part whilst also leaving the door open for more.

Antony Johnston has done a fantastic job of brining the first arc to a close with it being both exciting and intriguing. It’s never easy with an ongoing creator owned series to end an arc as you have to produce something that works as a stop gap whilst also making it entertaining that doesn’t ruin the story going forward. Johnston manages to pull this off as with the brilliant dialogue and exhilarating action it manages to be very entertaining. I also loved how it ended on a somewhat sombre not that teases the future of the series big time.

Christopher Mitten has produced astonishing artwork throughout this series and continues to do so here. He’s managed to capture the fantasy/magic aspect of this series perfectly with his rough style giving the appropriate tone and look. His layouts also help give more oomph and with the character expressions it adds to the overall tension and emotion throughout. Jordan Boyd also yet again delivers outstanding colours that give a fitting finish to Mitten’ fabulous art.

Umbral‘s first arc has ended and it’s done so on a high. It’s been a great ride and though we have a couple of months to wait for the next arc to start at least we now have the entire first arc to read whilst waiting. Highly recommended.

Vegas!

Chew41 Page3 Chew #41 ReviewChew is a series that I have been enjoying ever since it started and I can honestly say that I haven’t read a bad issue yet. This issue is no different as Tony’s rush wedding in Vegas as well as the case that he’s involved in after proved very entertaining. I did however feel that this issue rapped up this short tale rather too quickly as though this is just part one of a five part story it was still a shame that it felt rushed near the end.

John Layman is a pure genius knowing how to write a fun, entertaining series with a decent plot. The way he’s taken food and turned it into an intriguing and comical subject matter is truly amazing, as is the way he develops the characters within. I particularly loved the way he handled them in this issue as whether it was the rush wedding of Tony and Amelia or Applebee getting the same type of treatment from his boss as what he gives Tony, it all added to the humour and entertainment. On top of this I have to say that the final page of this issue is the funniest thing I’ve seen in Chew… don’t believe me then go and see for yourself.

Rob Guillory always excels when it comes to the art on this series and is what I enjoy the most in this series. His fun and quirky style always manages to add a smile to this fanboys face and I doubt there’s another artist that can convey Layman’s script as well as Guillory can (no matter how talented they are). The way that he shows character emotions and reactions is simply astounding as whether it’s joy, shock or sadness it always adds energy to the sequence in question. His multi toned colour pallet also continues to amaze giving a vibrant finish to his already stunning art.

Chew continues to impress with this tale of marriage and duty being a must have for any fan. Highly recommended.

Welcome to the war! Keep your hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times. Note: Your rebellion experience may vary.

The official description from Dark Horse:

A young Rebel meets one of the Alliance’s best for his first mission. But the young man’s hero worship is crushed by the reality of Han Solo. A botched escape, a ship that doesn’t work—could it be that Solo is just a lucky bumbler whose luck has run out?

* Han Solo–the truth behind the myth!

Star Wars Rebel Heist 1 Preview 2 475x700 Star Wars: Rebel Heist #1 ReviewHow else would you train new recruits? Teamed up with the best in the biz, in the line of fire, on the job training at its best! The sales pitch seems right – who wouldn’t want to join the rebellion for a chance to meet one of the famous four? Then again, there is that old saying,

“Never meet your heroes.”

And for the recruit in this story, it is likely sound advice. For that matter, he probably should have just stayed home reading about the myth, instead of meeting one.

I have to be honest, I am not up on all the Star Wars lore. Yes, I have seen the movies; I understand the hype; I even acknowledge the greatness. I am just not ga-ga over Star Wars. In fact, my preferred space stories involved gates and stars, not necessarily in that order…

But you know what? Matt Kindt has me hooked. In this one issue, I am ready and waiting for the next three. As far as I am concerned, this is a great jumping on point. The learning curve entails reading the introduction, and a little knowledge about the famed characters. Even then, if you didn’t know about Han Solo’s bravado before, you will at the end of this issue.

I think this is just wonderful. As we all know, Matt is known for his fabulous creator-owned works (most notably (for me anyway): Mind MGMT), as well as countless writing credits for all the best publishers. But did we also know he had a stellar Star Wars script lurking among all that greatness? Well, now we do.

And let’s not forget the art. The pencils (Marco Castiello), inks (Dan Parsons), and colors (Gabe Eltaeb) work wonderfully for this cosmic adventure! The story really comes to life at the hands of these fine artists.

Star Wars Rebel Heist 1 Preview 1 475x700 Star Wars: Rebel Heist #1 Review

Oh, and the cover? Well what has to be said? Adam Hughes did a fine job capturing the essence of the issue, the man, the myth and the legend…

So, I am not sure what the die-hard Star Wars fanatic is going to think, but this casual Star Wars informed, Matt Kindt fan really digs this first of four part mini-series.

And one final note, if I were to sum this issue up with a hashtag, it would be: #AllPartOfThePlan

How much change can happen in 40 years? Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

Welcome to Craw County, Alabama, home of Boss BBQ, the state champion Runnin’ Rebs football team…and more bastards than you’ve ever seen. When you’re an angry old man like Earl Tubb, the only way to survive a place like this…is to carry a really big stick. From the acclaimed team of JASON AARON and JASON LATOUR, the same bastards who brought you Scalped and Wolverine: Japan’s Most Wanted, comes a southern fried crime series that’s like the Dukes of Hazzard meets the Coen Brothers…on meth.

Southern Bastards 1 variant SOUTHERN BASTARDS #1 ReviewSouthern Bastards is the latest in Image’s long line of highly anticipated creator owned series featuring yet another high profile writer. The story of Sothern Bastards is one of change showing just how vast a town can change in the space of 40 years and how the actions of one resident who’s unwilling to go with the flow may cause more trouble than he’d expect.

Jason Aaron does a fantastic job of creating a realistic and intriguing tale that has a lot of depth. He also does a brilliant job of introducing us to this world as though it’s not as elaborate or fascinating as some we see in comics it does have a certain charm to it. I also love how Aaron gives a history to the main character, showing how his past and the actions of his father have shaped him into the man he is today. Despite all this the issue doesn’t give us a fundamental path in which the story is going in with it taking a while to show any promise of future development. I do however feel very confident that Aaron will work off this great start and give us a truly captivating series in the long run.

We get yet another Jason working on this title with the fabulous Jason Latour providing the artwork for this series. His gritty style is perfectly suited to this title giving the kind of look that a series titled Southern Bastards needs. It’d however be Latour’s awesome layouts that I’d love the most with them giving real depth and tone to this story, helping to highlight certain areas of the story. He also captured the emotion of the characters perfectly as well, adding yet more realism to this opening issue. Added to this Latour also gives a tremendous finish to his art with his outstanding colour pallet.

Southern Bastards gets off to a great start as though there’s still a little work needed before it matches the hype it’s produces I certainly see it reaching that soon. Highly recommended.

In comments made on the Kevin Smith podcast show, Fatman on Batman, Marvel Entertainment’s very own Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada expressed his feelings about Man of Steel saying that “Zod was the hero of the movie to me”.

General Zod, the villain of Man of Steel, also known as the genocidal mass murdering war criminal who attempted to overthrow the ruling body of Krypton in a bloody military coup who also wanted to use  the Kryptonian Codex to selectively choose which Kryptonian genetic trait lines and gene pools are worthy of saving.

But maybe we should just call him what he is – the Kryptonian Hitler.

JOE QUESADA Thinks War Criminals Are Heroes

Joe Quesada

However, Unleash The Fanboy may be mistaken – Joe Quesada’s comments may have been taken out of context, so let’s take a look at the full transcript:

“He [Zod] wanted to save his race, and Superman didn’t let him. Zod, in this particular incarnation, struck me as not necessarily an evil man, but a man of…he had a particular…he had his orders, he had a mission. He was a zealot of sorts …again, correct me if I’m wrong… but he didn’t say, ‘I want to rebuild Krypton, and then come back and destroy this little planet. All I want is to rebuild this planet. And the only reason I’m blowing everything to bits here is because you’ve got what I want, and you’re not giving it to me. So please, give me my people, and I’ll leave.”

Okay, this doesn’t look good. But maybe if we take each individual statement it will start to look better for Joe Quesada.

Zod wanted to save his race, and Superman didn’t let him.

Save his race? They were fine! They didn’t need to try to blow up an entire planet. Why couldn’t they live in peace? Superman didn’t let him save his race? Zod was killing millions of people!

Zod… struck me as not necessarily an evil man.

He deliberately turned on the World Engine knowing that it would lead to the death of millions of people! He killed other Kryptonians who got in his way!

He had his orders, he had a mission.

General Zod was a total authoritarian dictator!

1794656 superman best movies ever general zod zack snyder curt johnson JOE QUESADA Thinks War Criminals Are Heroes

He was a zealot of sorts.

Okay, we give up.

He didn’t say, ‘I want to rebuild Krypton, and then come back and destroy this little planet.

No, he didn’t need to come back to Earth, he was building Krypton on top of Earth. To rebuild Krypton is to destroy Earth. Did this guy even watch the movie?

The only reason I’m blowing everything to bits here is because you’ve got what I want, and you’re not giving it to me.

Like what happened to more than half of Europe? I can’t. I just can’t.

Please, give me my people, and I’ll leave.

He wasn’t leaving, he was colonizing the Earth! Not just colonizing, but getting rid of the entire indigenous population to make room for his specially selected Kryptonians that he deems perfect.

One really has to wonder what Quesada is doing working in an industry that’s supposedly all about heroism, truth, justice and freedom when he thinks racist, xenophobic, mass murdering, genocidal war criminals like General Zod are heroes.

W. Haden Blackman is currently writting Marvel’s new Elektra solo book after wrapping up an epic run with J.H. Williams III on Batwoman.  He took some time out of his busy schedule to indulge  some of my curiosities. Oh, and before I forget, make sure you check out Elektra #2 is on-sale on May 21st.

[UTF]Kate Kane is one of the most fully developed characters in comics books ever. What were some of the challenges in balancing the complexity of her character while moving the story forward in monthly installments?

[Haden] The biggest challenge was telling a compelling story without rehashing what had come before. Greg Rucka did a great job establishing Kate, and we just wanted to build off of that. In order to make sure that the character was always moving forward, always changing, and still dealing with drama and conflict in both her personal and “professional” lives, we expanded the cast quite a bit – and juggling all the characters, making sure that the relationships all got enough pages, was sometimes difficult.

Haden blackman EXCLUSIVE: Interview With W. Haden Blackman

[UTF] In 2012 you won a GLAAD media award for your work on Batwoman. Did this come as a surprise at the time, and what was your reaction to the award?

[Haden] I wasn’t surprised we were nominated – at that time, we were one of the few books starring a LGBT character – but I was very surprised and honored that we actually won, given some of the competition we were up against. I am really proud to be part of the small group of writers and artists that have dealt with LGBT issues in comics.

Batwoman Vol 1 19 Cover 1 590x466 EXCLUSIVE: Interview With W. Haden Blackman

[UTF] How would you categorize your take on Elektra as opposed other iterations of the character we’ve seen before?

[Haden] I see Elektra as a combination of the character as seen in Elektra Assassin and in Zeb Wells’ Dark Reign series. Internally, she has a lot going on – she is wrestling with who she is and how she’s been defined in the past by others. I think that we got a glimpse into Elektra’s mind in Elektra Assassin, and I want to further explore that, chiefly through her narration. Externally, she’s stoic and tough and taciturn, as seen in Zeb’s Dark Reign.

ELEKTRA2014001 DC81 LR a93a3 461x700 EXCLUSIVE: Interview With W. Haden Blackman

[UTF] What is your collaboration process with Michael Del Mundo on Elektra?

[Haden] It feels like a very organic partnership to me. For the first issue, he had some sketches he wanted to try to salvage, so I wrote a scene (the opening, in fact) around the core concept of Elektra dancing – drawing parallels between dance and martial arts. Before I write a script, we shoot ideas back and forth constantly through IM, over the phone, e-mail. My scripts tend to be pretty detailed, down to angles and page layout, but if Mike comes up with a better idea, we go for it. Once he has the script, Mike does quick thumbnails that I can react to – usually, though, my reaction is “that looks awesome.” I get to see the pages as he fleshes them out in case we need to do any course correction, but there have been minimal changes once the issue gets going. The cover process is really fun too – basically, I get to throw out a bunch of ideas, Mike picks a few to flesh out as sketches, and then Marvel makes a call on the final direction.

[UTF] Was there any sense of apprehension in taking on Elektra, such a fan favorite with a spotty history of solo titles?

[Haden] Absolutely. The idea of following the likes of Miller, Rucka, Wells – that’s all really daunting. But, I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t have something to say, a story I wanted to tell. I love the idea of Elektra realizing that she’s been in the shadow of others her whole life, and then vowing to change that, to make her own decisions.

22 460x700 EXCLUSIVE: Interview With W. Haden Blackman

[UTF] What are some the adjustments that developed in your story telling skills moving from video games to comic books?

[Haden] Both are really visual mediums, but I think people really underestimate how different they are. With video games, the story is just one component of a massive undertaking that includes risky and unpredictable tech development, schedule and budget constraints, and (most importantly) gameplay design. As a game writer, you have to understand the technical limitations of an engine and the financial, staffing and schedule constraints of the project. You also have to take into account the needs of the game design – on every project I’ve ever worked on, we were changing the story at the 11th hour in order to react to a game design change. Games also need to account for player agency – some level of player involvement and interaction with the narrative.

With comics, I need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the artist, but there is no “VFX budget” – I don’t have to worry about whether or not the engine can handle a massive explosion, or whether the character models are going to be detailed enough to emote and pull off a love scene as long as I have confidence in the artist. I definitely want to draw the reader in, but readers understand that a comic is the character’s story, not the reader’s story, so there’s no issues of narrative agency to address.

Conversely, games allow player to multi-task, so story isn’t always the primary focus. The player usually has a lot to absorb about beyond the story, and gameplay, player agency, and an immersive environment can enhance the narrative dramatically. In some ways, it’s easier to get a player to invest in the story and characters because they are the protagonist and part of the story.

Comics are more challenging in this regard, where every issue needs to be an audition for the next issue. We need to keep outdoing ourselves, month in and month out, and I need to be able to keep people captivated over several months through only 20 pages each month.

[UTF] Writing for comics and games is a very collaborative enterprise.  Does this take away from your sense of ownership of the stories you are telling?

[Haden] Not at all. For me, the end goal is ensuring that the reader experiences a great story. I don’t care if the ideas come from me, or Mike, or Sana Amanat (our fantastic editor), or anyone else.

51C952GPYWL EXCLUSIVE: Interview With W. Haden Blackman

[UTF] Where did the idea for, The Field Guide to North American Hauntings and The Field Guide to North American Monsters come from?

[Haden] I was always a huge fan of books on monsters and wanted to write one. I pitched it to an agent in Northern California, and she got the ball rolling. Random House (the publisher) offered to make it a two book deal in order to get one on hauntings as well.

[UTF] What title do you make sure to catch every month?

[Haden] Hawkeye.

A special thanks to W. Haden Blackman for taking the time and remember issue #2 of Elektra will be out on May 21st.

SATIRE!  THIS IS SATIRE

In what can only be described as the biggest plot twist of all time, Warner Bros. just announced today that a Wonder Woman solo film starring Israeli actress, Gal Gadot is currently in development.

According to official reports from Greg Silverman, Warner Bros. President of Worldwide Production, the now upcoming Wonder Woman film “will be a further expansion of this universe. Batman vs. Superman will lead directly into Justice League Wonder Woman,”

Silverman also went on to say that “a script is in development, however it is unlikely very likely that we will see a finished film before 2018.”

The Zack Snyder-directed Man of Steel sequel will introduce Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman before Zack Snyder will return to direct the Wonder Woman solo film.

Reports from earlier today reported that a Zack Snyder-directed Justice League movie will follow Batman vs. Superman, but an exclusive Unleash The Fanboy source close to the director told us that this Justice League movie will likely be put on “indefinite hiatus” in favor of the Wonder Woman solo film.

875e0304b2c9a1c1f9eb60802d6db7d2 What If: Wonder Woman Movie Happening; Justice League Cancelled*

According to Sue Kroll, President of Worldwide Marketing, said that they are “warm to the idea” of a Justice League film and “With the right script; that could be viable. The world is ready for her them.”

But of course, in Hollywood when a film is stated to be on “indefinite hiatus” it means that the film is all but cancelled.

Sorry, internet. It looks like we are just going to have to keep trying for that Justice League movie until Warner Bros. listens to us.

While attending this year’s Amazing Arizona Comic Con I was able to sit down with creator Josh Henaman and discuss his title Bigfoot – Sword of the Earthman.

UTF: So where did the inspiration for Bigfoot – Sword of the Earthman come from?

Bigfoot Epic Pose 150x150 EXCLUSIVE: Josh Henaman talks BIGFOOT SWORD OF THE EARTHMANJosh Henaman: The inspiration actually came from a NASA photo. Back in 2007, the Spirit rover actually photographed what looked like Bigfoot on Mars. So the media latched onto it. So if you Google that image, you can see it and from there that’s how I got the idea. Then I started thinking, how did he get there? And then it just evolved into a Conan the Barbarian meets Flash Gordon kind of thing.

UTF: When you first started to craft this world, how did you find someone to capture the visual side of the equation?

Bigfoot Cover 150x150 EXCLUSIVE: Josh Henaman talks BIGFOOT SWORD OF THE EARTHMANJosh Henaman: Well, I wrote the first six issues first before I even tried to find an artist. And then I knew I wanted somebody with a little quirky kind of style. What I was looking for is kind of like Mike Mignola. I needed somebody who kind of had that kind of vibe. So, I put down an ad through the various sites and eventually I found my artist, Andy Taylor.

UTF: And for the illustrator, Andy Taylor, is this his first original book or did he have a history in the industry already?

Josh Henaman: He has done a couple of anthologies, but this was his first long form kind of book.

UTF: All right. So, you said it was Conan the Barbarian meets Flash Gordon. I got to tell you that tickles my fancy. Could you tell us a little bit more about Bigfoot as a main character?

Bigfood with a broadsword 150x150 EXCLUSIVE: Josh Henaman talks BIGFOOT SWORD OF THE EARTHMANJosh Henaman: First off he’s mute. He does not talk throughout the whole thing. So, I knew going into that I would have an uphill battle to try to convey emotion and the world around him. So he was a character that kind of does the same thing, but, I mean, in the very opening of the book I described Bigfoot as Lover of women, Destroyer of men.

UTF: Well, it definitely sounds interesting. So if you were to pitch this comic to the average consumer what would you say?

Josh Henaman: It’s Bigfoot with a Broadsword.

I want to take the time to thank Mr. Josh Henaman for chatting with me. It was a real pleasure to speak with him and I can say this is without a doubt an original property that’s more than worth owning.

So what did you think of the interview my fellow fanboys and fangirls?

Sound off with your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below!

If you watched last night’s episode of Game of Thrones, then you’ve seen the great game changing luck that’s just struck the Stark’s, but if not… you should probably turn away right now. Don’t spoil the show for yourself! It’s just too good!

Now that our obligatory caveat’s out of the way… Here’s how the Starks just became the most family in Game of Thrones.

So, you remember that Albino Darth Maul from the end of the episode? The one who used his super powerful (and super creepy) fingernail magic to transform Craster’s last male child into a White Walker, blue eyes and all. Well, apparently that giant spiky headed creep wasn’t always an ice demon. No… he was actually a Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. One of the earliest.

nights king1 Heres How The STARKS Just Became the Most Powerful Family in GAME OF THRONES

His name’s Night King. 13th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, he ruled the wall after the Long Night. Renowned for his battle record, Night’s King was an all around good guy and defender of humankind. Until he fell in love with a lady White Walker, that is. According to the legend, Night’s King banged a female Other, took her back to the Wall, and ruled the Night’s Watch as a cruel despot. It took the combined might of the Stark’s and A King Beyond the Wall to defeat Night’s King.

Well, that was 8,000 years ago, and as we’ve seen in tonight’s episode, the old’ tyrant’s still alive and well. He appears to be a king of the White Walkers, which is pretty weird. What happened to all of the other White Walkers that he and the Southerners fought during the Long Night? If Night’s King can so easily rule the White Walkers, who were the prodoginators of this race? We know so little about them, but of what we do know, new White Walkers are created by converting newborn human children. So… who were they originally?

I have absolutely no answer for any of these questions, but all I know is Night’s King appears to lead the White Walkers. Oh, and he might be a Stark. That’s right. Of all the many rumored houses this Darth Maul look-a-like might call home, the most compelling one is House Stark. While his desires might exceed the petty wars of Winterfell and King’s Landing, he’s a Stark nonetheless (brother of Bran the Builder, according to the story). While Daenerys Targaryen might have a handful of adolescent dragons, and Stannis Baratheon has his creepy Red Priestess, the Starks have an Ice God.

“Winter Is Coming” has a whole new meaning, doesn’t it? Less of a warning and more of a festive announcement. Whenever the Night’s King utters it, of course.  Dude totally loves Winter.  Nothing like fresh snowfall, fresh lemon sorbet, and the sweet scents of Westeros on the wind.

Now, I’m not saying Night’s King will wage war on behalf of Ned Stark and the misfortune his family’s experienced at the hand of the Lannisters… still, the Stark’s have an Ice God on the roster.  That’s gotta count for something.

I wish I could make this stuff up (because I’m a terrible liar, and I totally want that devious skill) but according to the latest Hollywood gab, Matt Damon of the Hobbiton Damons is rumored for a cameo role as Aquaman in Batman Vs Superman. That role would lead into a full blown casting in 2017′s Justice League Movie.

No joke.

Here’s what they said:

“One casting rumor that has been circulating around Hollywood for more than a year is that Affleck’s close friend and collaborator Matt Damon is being sought to play Aquaman, though to be fair, Jason Momoa has also been rumored for that role (among others), and he is expected to appear in “Batman vs. Superman” in some unknown capacity.” – Jeff Sneider

Matt Damon As AQUAMAN? No Bullsh*t.

Yeah, Jason Momoa seems like the far more likely candidate. If director Zack Snyder is aiming for a “barbarian king” aesthetic for this new cinematic Aquaman, Momoa is far better than Damon. He’s already perfectly portrayed a horse riding nomad in Game of Thrones, and an acceptable iteration of Arnold Shwarzenegger’s classic Conan, so what’s a King of Atlantis between us?

Matt Damon would be INSANELY goofy as a regal aqua monarch, too. If Aquaman were adapted as a pseudo-Thor. In the sense that character was transformed into a modern American in the original comics to counter his audacious Asgardian personality. If Aquaman is an orphan, abandoned on land, and ignorant of his powers, then I’d have a better time believing him as a superhero. But if Damon is meant to be a Cockney accented, kingly, underwater lord… then that’s just silly. He’s too folksy.

We all knew this was coming. Batman vs. Superman is already giving us the lite-version with Batman, Wonder Woman and Cyborg fight alongside Superman, but now it’s official: the Justice League film is on the way, and it will be directed by Zack Snyder. Breaking the news to The Wall Street Journal, Warner Bros. president of worldwide production Greg Silverman revealed that Justice League will follow Batman vs. Superman.

It will be a further expansion of this universe. ‘Superman vs Batman’ will lead into ‘Justice League.’

justice league 590x393 JUSTICE LEAGUE Is On The Way, And Zack Snyder Is Directing It!

Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot are expected to reprise their roles as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, respectively. Speaking of our famed Amazon, while there are no current plans for her own spinoff film, president of worldwide marketing Sue Kroll stated that going solo is certainly a possibility.

With the right script, that could be viable. The world is ready for her.

Other properties from DC Comics and its Vertigo line that are being developed include Shazam, Metal Men, 100 Bullets and Fables. As for the Justice League members, the complete lineup isn’t known besides the Trinity, but if you connect the dots, you can get a good idea of who’s on the roster. Ray Fisher was recently cast as Cyborg, and Flash, Aquaman and Green Lantern have all been rumored, which likely means we’ll be getting the New 52 lineup of heroes. A moment of silence for Martian Manhunter, please.

JUSTICE LEAGUE Is On The Way, And Zack Snyder Is Directing It!

With Justice League officially announced, the next question is when it will be released. Silverman says that the script is still in development, so it’s unlikely we’ll see it before 2018. However, el Mayimbe over at Latino Review has information that says differently. According to his source, the movie will be released on May 5, 2017, although the official announcement won’t come until Comic-Con. The Hollywood Reporter has also confirmed this date, but still take it with a grain of salt.

It’s good that Warner Bros. finally announced Justice League officially, but my main concern is Zack Snyder. Man of Steel reception was polarizing and we don’t know how Batman vs. Superman will turn out. He obviously can deliver the action in these movies, but will he be able to convincingly bring these heroes together in a meaningful way? That has yet to be determined, but if Warner Bros. wants him directing possibly the biggest superhero film of all time, they must have good reasons.

Also, for the love of God, do not have Zack Snyder direct every DC film. Part of what makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe great is the different tones of each film brought by different directors. Seriously Warner Bros., start head hunting now. Snyder may be your go-to-guy for ensembles, but I want new creative minds for Wonder Woman, the rebooted Batman and all the others.

Wonder Woman pic1 JUSTICE LEAGUE Is On The Way, And Zack Snyder Is Directing It!

Still, we should be glad that Justice League is officially a go. Playing catch-up with Marvel isn’t the ideal way of getting the movie out, but at least DC and Warner Bros. are finally working towards getting these famous superheroes together on the big screen. Now the DC and Marvel war really begins.

I always get excited at the prospect of a Rarity episode, she seems to have consistently quality outings. From the classic ‘Suited for Success‘ to the more recent (and amazingly awesome) ‘Rarity Takes Manehatten,’ she has had quite a few great episodes. This one got some interesting hype. When you release a promo image with a pony having evil green eyes, hype is ensured. Is Rarity a Changeling? Is Queen Chrysalis back?? Sadly, those aren’t the cases. But what we do get is pretty solid nonetheless. It was interesting to see Rarity take on a more antagonistic role.

Here’s the official episode description from The Hub:

Rarity is suffering from a bad case of creator’s block when she is asked to help make designs for an upcoming fair. Spike tries to help out by using a magic spell he learned that will bring anything Rarity thinks of to life. But the spell works too well as Rarity starts to get carried away and tries to make everything in Ponyville fancy.

This wasn’t a classic like ‘Rarity Takes Manehatten,’ but it was definitely a lot of fun. (And much better than the previous episode, ‘Trade Ya!’) Spike was surprisingly a highlight. He hasn’t had really any great roles in the season, so it’s good to see him taking on a proactive part here. (He actually learns a lesson without looking too foolish.) This lesson is something that is applicable to everyone. If you see your friend is doing something you don’t think is right, then it’s your job to let them know about it. It’s amazing to this day how this show can evoke such emotion from the viewer. How can one not feel sad after Claude tells Rarity her invention is awful?

Inspiration Manifestation EW promotional image1 My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Inspiration Manifestation Review

Rarity turning ‘evil’ was fun to watch. I do however think this plot could have been expanded a bit. There’s no information at all about the book. Who wrote it? What was it for really? The ending is also very anti-climatic. Spike’s speech was nice, but enough to actually whip out that energy from Rarity? Speaking of which, where did that energy go? There’s quite a few unexplained things, which may have benefited from a two-parter. Think about it: wouldn’t it have been great to see Rarity completely go the other way and the other ponies have to journey and stop her, in the process gaining information on that infamous book?  Still the ending wasn’t terrible, just a little disappointing. Oh, and having Owlowiscious throughout the episode making Spike realize the truth was an excellent touch, definitely his best role since his first appearance back in Season 1.

Overall, a solid episode. ‘Inspiration Manifestation‘ has some cool concepts, though sadly a few are left unexplained. Despite that, it’s a lot of fun. Spike actually has a solid role, and watching Rarity never gets old. The background music was also a surprising highlight, it actually makes the episode have an epic feel.

We’ve all, at one point or another, faced situations in life that seemed massive and near impossible to deal with. In those moments we failed or succeeded because we took a chance to cope the best way we knew how. We leaned on something to keep us going, namely our own unique comfort food.

THE WONDER YEARS

When I was a kid I had my differences from other people. To put into perspective this fanboy was an overweight child with speech issues that spent a lot of his time delving into fantasy worlds even as people made fun of him for it. From television to video games I had my distractions but it wasn’t until the day that I first opened up a comic book that I felt like I found my escape.

Peter Parker Spider Man 44 C COMIC BOOKS: My Comfort FoodThere was something about Spider-Man that instantly spoke to me. Maybe it was the fact that Peter Parker was made fun of and ridiculed by the world around him. Or, on a deeper level, even on his worst day he still donned his trademark tights and went into action. He’d save anyone. Friend or foe it didn’t matter to our intrepid wall-crawler.

As I got older I was introduced to animated versions that drew me into other properties such as Batman, Superman, X-Men and Justice League. Each show gave me people that were different but still striving to find their place in the world.

I like that these serialized tales taught me a lot in regards to the type of person I want to be. They even highlight the traits that I want to pass on as a future generation takes over and does their thing.

X Men in the 90s COMIC BOOKS: My Comfort Food

THE HIGH SCHOOL YEARS

Witchblade TNT Original Movie COMIC BOOKS: My Comfort FoodThe personal problems mounted and so did the many comics that helped me deal with them. As most teenagers I went through a lot of issues (and that is what they call a double entendre). Whenever life got tough and I had to face football practice, class, my time in the school orchestra and the pressures of my first job I ran to a corner and read the latest releases. These stapled pieces of paper became exactly what I needed.

My favorite title had to be Witchblade, because when I saw the TNT original movie something about this spunky cop with a kick-ass gauntlet instantly spoke to me. Next to Amazing Spider-Man and Peter Parker: Spider-Man it was the only other one I bought monthly. I had no subscription so I paid attention to my local shop’s official website and waited for them to appear week in and week out.

TURNING POINT

CrossGEn 150x150 COMIC BOOKS: My Comfort FoodWhen I played on Varsity football, in order to earn my pads I had to run a mile run under a certain limit. I failed. I trained with my dad, shaved down my time but I still didn’t get the job done. Needless to say I was upset, then I got home and grabbed a pile of comics. At this point I did not bag and board, I simply had them at the ready on one of my shelves. I kept reading until I felt better. Titles from CrossGen, Top Cow, Marvel and DC lead the way until I finally started to come out the other side.

And that’s why I’m writing this.

WRAP IT UP

Running with Superman 150x150 COMIC BOOKS: My Comfort FoodWe exist in an age where fandom on face value is largely accepted, but plenty of it isn’t. Ask any fanboy or fangirl out there and there’s still judgment going around. More than anything I want to offer some simple advice: go out and find what makes you happy. Watch an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise, play with your My Little Pony, become engrossed in a comic book movie, journey through a video game or play a round of Dungeons & Dragons. Be yourself: go find your niche!

And don’t listen to what others say about it!

Case and point: Comic Books are my Comfort Food!

This week’s Teen Titans Go! episode had a pretty simple plot. Did it work? SPOILERS!

The concept is simple. One night, the Titans go to bed. And we get to see all their dreams. Not much to it. And yet, its one of the most entertaining episodes in awhile.

All the dreams reflect their personalities, and as someone says in the episode, their secret desires! I liked how each character’s dream changed animation depending on personality and story. Starfire’s (Hynden Walch) dream has happy, pastel colors and kittens, Cyborg’s (Khary Payton) plays out like an old-school platforming game with sprites, and Beast Boy’s (Greg Cipes) isn’t even animated!

TTG ep49 Dreams Still011 TEEN TITANS GO! Dreams Review

Robin (Scott Menville) may have the stand-out though; his dream uses ACTUAL FOOTAGE from the original Teen Titans cartoon and film! As if that wasn’t amazing enough, all the lines featured are re-dubbed, to very, very humorous effect. Lets just say that Robin may be more full of himself than we thought!

Raven’s (Tara Strong) may be the biggest surprise…or not, depending on what you expected! The way it ends will make you laugh, and then feel guilty about it. Hers gets dark…..

Over-all, a really entertaining episode that can also work as a visionary experience. Completely recommended.

No one knows when the next Guardians of the Galaxy trailer will be released, but at least we do have a description-transcript of the second trailer!

Guardians of the Galaxy Prison1 GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Trailer #2 (Description)

The transcript appeared online via Latino Review.

Step 1: A white guy named Peter, a green alien lady, a tree and a raccoon walk into a bar.

Step 2: Then they are on a space ship. Then they are on a jungle planet. Then Ronan The Accuser.

Step 3: Cue catchy song, Norman Greenbaum’s Spirit in the Sky.

Step 4: Comics journalism freaks out because wow, space, wow revolutionary, wow, Marvel.

Here is an excerpt from the trailer description:

Star Lord’s ship, the Milano, speeds towards a barren looking planet. We cut to the Guardians walking through some sort of space-port or bar with Zoe Saldana’s Gamorra in the lead. Peter Quill voice overs: “So here we are: A thief” - Star Lord stands in front of a cloud outside and tosses the ORB into the air and catches it. It looks like part of the movie where the MacGuffin chase favors the Guardians. “Two Criminals” - Rocket Racoon hefts what looks like a four-barrell rocket launcher, cocks it and aims it through the site. Groot throws a puny humanoid. “An Assassin” - Gamora turns, looking hot and green, then we see a quick cut of her fighting who I hope to be Nebula (Karen Gillian). “And a maniac” - Hello DRAX! Push in on David Bautista from the shoulders up, full make-up, scowling as something explodes behind him. Quick cut of Drax doing a mid-air punch on someone, cut of Drax head-butting a dude. “But we’re not going to stand by while evil wipes out the galaxy.” Shot of Ronan the Accuser’s ship. Shot of a hooded Lee Pace as Ronin walking towards the camera. Close up shot of someone’s fist closing around a glowing red energy source. The fist suddenly CLENCHES and we cut to an exterior explosion and a crowd of aliens and humanoids running from it (from back when they shot on the Millennium bridge for all to see, it looks like).

But more importantly, Unleash The Fanboy wants to consult an expert on what this trailer description means for the comic book film industry and whether it could be a sign towards a trend of releasing trailer descriptions before the actual trailers.

“A lot of trailers are leaking nowadays somehow (like the final X-Men one) and studios don’t seem to care that their trailers are being tossed about online way before release. In the future, I expect more transcripts as more trailers find their way onto the internet early,” said resident expert, Louis Rabinowitz, Professor of Comic Book Film Trailers, PhD.

When asked what kind of impact this would have on the industry, Dr. Rabinowitz said, “Since studios want trailers to be a big vent, it’s going to take a bit out of the trailer hype, so people might resort to pirating trailers rather than watching the real official deal when the studios want them to.”

But when it comes to the impact this would have on comics journalism, Dr. Rabinowitz only said, “Meh.”

“Sites will cover those transcripts every time, so they’ll get bigger and bigger with more demand, I’d guess.”

While attending this year’s Amazing Arizona Comic Con I was able to sit down with outstanding illustrator Sina Grace. We discussed style and the inevitably awesome series Burn the Orphanage!

UTF: So can you tell our listeners a little bit about Burn The Orphanage: Born To Lose?

Sina Grace: Yeah, so Burn The Orphanage is a series that is a love letter to video games. Born To Lose is the first story arc. It follows an orphan named Rock who’s left for dead in a burning orphanage and fights his way through the mean streets trying to find out who did it and lots of silly action goes from there.

UTF: Definitely lots of over-the-top violence and excellent, excellent references, so I have to ask where did your inspiration for your art style come from?

Born to Lose 150x150 EXCLUSIVE: Sina Grace talks BURN THE ORPHANAGESina Grace: For the art style, I just felt like drawing something that was more fun than emotional and I wanted to do a kind of crazy action book that wouldn’t stress me out as much as the slice-of-life stuff does. So it was cool to look at Ryan Ottley on Invincible, Sean Murphy in The Wake, a lot of the old comic books I had growing up in the ’90′s. Just trying to get that fun energy that you see in a lot of really cool modern action comics. I was trying to vibe with that.

UTF: As a fellow gamer that grew up in the late ’80′s early ’90′s, oppose to the modern consumer that has never played old school beat ‘em ups how would you go about pitching this title to them?

Burn the Orphanage Over the Top EXCLUSIVE: Sina Grace talks BURN THE ORPHANAGESina Grace: I would call it a fun-action romp, blood-soaked, because at the end of the day, yeah, it’s just silliness, but it’s got a sense of humor and heart. It’s just a fun book with bruisers and dudes.

UTF: So how did you end up working with Daniel Freedman on this title?

Burn the Oprhanage Born to Lose 3 C EXCLUSIVE: Sina Grace talks BURN THE ORPHANAGESina Grace: Daniel [Freedman] and I actually went to high school and middle school together and we were not really friends back then. We re-connected a couple of years later when I was working for Skybound and he was doing Undying Love with Tomm Coker. We realized that as young adults we had a lot more in common than we did in high school, so we would start working together and working next to each other, him writing movies and comics, and me drawing comic books.

The concept came from our love of the band, Sleigh Bells, and this era of artwork and sort of 8-bit styles and it just came from our friendship.

I want to take the time to thank Mr. Sina Grace for chatting with me. It was a pleasure, and I can’t wait to see what the talent accomplishes in 2014!

So what did you think of the interview my fellow fanboys and fangirls?

Sound off with your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below!

Has the wait for First Contact Part 3 been worth it? Read on to find out.

The official description from DC Comics:

“First Contact” continues from last month’s explosive WORLD’S FINEST #20 as Batman, Superman, Huntress and Power Girl battle a massive new threat to the DC Universe! As Kaizan Gamorra unleashes the means to take down Superman, an unbelievable discovery is made that will have major repercussions in 2014!

Batman Superman 9 variant1 Batman/Superman #9 ReviewI have been loving Batman/Superman since it started last year but the delay of this issue has really annoyed me over recent weeks. You know a crossover has been handled poorly when the final part is released before the penultimate part and this only adds to DC’s scheduling problems following the delay in Forever Evil related issues. Now I do sympathise as it can’t be good for DC themselves but at the end of the day these sort of avoidable problems do annoy fans and ultimately take away from the overall story.

Greg Pak gives us a interest continuation to this crossover as though it’s not as captivating as the first two parts it does do a great job of developing the story and the events of the final part. The interaction between Huntress and Superman as well as Powergirl and Batman had to be the most enjoyable parts of this script with the characteristic and differences between worlds being noticeable. I also found Batman and Superman’s memories of the first arc to be a neat addition and with Toymaster also making an appearance everything from the series so far felt connected. Despite this the issue didn’t feel worth the wait and was probably the worst of the crossover.

I’ve always had mixed views when it comes to Jae Lee‘s art and after reading this issue I can say that these haven’t changed. Lee’s art may be beautiful with his covers being some of the best in the business. I do however find his interiors to be rather jarring at times with the overuse of flowing movement and hair being very unappealing to this fanboy. Despite that there’s a lot that I love about Lee’s art as despite his fabulous covers he also produces amazing layouts that are extremely exciting. He also gives powerful facial expressions and exhilarating action proving that though there’s a lot I dislike about his art there’s also a lot I love.

Batman/Superman #9 has finally arrived though sadly despite being a decent read it didn’t feel quite worth the long wait. It’ll now take the reading of First Contact in a oner to determine whether it’s a story I want to remember or forget. It still however gets a recommendation.

The official description from DC Comics:

A gang war erupts in Gotham City, but the G.C.P.D. doesn’t plan to help Batman stop it. Plus: The return of a fan-favorite Batman supporting character: Stephanie Brown!

BMETRL 3 1 e622b Batman: Eternal #3 ReviewBatman: Eternal is quickly becoming the must have Batman series, as though the Zero Year story remains as captivating as ever this weekly is much more interesting. The issue saw many developments including a change in the Gotham City Police Department as well an appearance from the Penguin all of which added intrigue. In saying that these developments didn’t have anywhere near as big an affect on me as the introduction of Stephanie Brown to the New 52 and I’m sure there’ll be many that will be happy about her return.

Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV once again handle the script with Ray Fawkes, John Layman and Tim Seeley once again acting as consulting writers. The duo have really been on a roll when it comes to this amazing story with every twist and turn proving to be as captivating as the previous. The way that they handled Stephanie Brown’s reintroduction along with the developments in the GCPD was simply awe-inspiring as though the developments themselves weren’t as shocking as they could have been the overall suspense that this adds is amazing.

Jason Fabok once again excels with the artwork on this issue with the sleek dark style being perfect for this series. The way that Fabok captures the dark tone of the Caped Crusader has always astounded me as has his ability to give gripping and exciting panels. It is however his attention to detail that amazes me the most as whether a character, facial expression or scenery it all is flawless. We also yet again get phenomenal colours from Brad Anderson with his dark pallet working perfectly alongside Fabok’s pencils and inks.

Batman: Eternal continues to astound and with the introduction of Stephanie Brown as well as the drastic change to the GCPD it looks to get even better. Highly recommended.

Earlier this week, we reported on comments made by Star Wars producer Simon Kinberg about the vast Expanded Universe. Kinberg stated that while the future films and TV shows may draw from the EU, but “the canon is the six films that exist.” Pretty straightforward, right? Okay, if you’re like me, maybe you were hoping for a little wiggle room on that rule.

Today, Lucasfilm sent out a press release putting the issue to rest once and for all. While elements of the EU will be drawn upon for future projects, such as The Inquisitor and Sienar Fleet Systems in Star Wars Rebels, the “immovable” stories of the Star Wars canon are the six films and the Clone Wars TV series. They also confirmed that the sequel trilogy will be not be based on any EU stories.

In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe.

Well, if you were still hoping to see cinematic portrayals of Grand Admiral Thrawn and Mara Jade, those hopes have been blasted away. The press release stated that starting now, “all aspects of Star Wars storytelling moving forward will be connected.” To manage this new continuity of stories, Lucasfilm has created a story group to “oversee and coordinate all Star Wars creative development.” Past EU stories will continue to be sold, but will be imprinted with the “Legends” banner.

Star Wars heir to the empire legends 426x700 Lucasfilm Confirms STAR WARS Expanded Universe Has Been Thrown Out

The first on-screen addition to the new canon will be the Disney XD series Star Wars Rebels, which will premiere in Fall 2014. The first new book to be published will be Star Wars: A New Dawn by John Jackson Miller, which will precede Star Wars Rebels and will tell “the story of how two of the lead characters of the series, Kanan Jarrus and Hera Syndulla, came to cross paths.” Books that will be released after A New Dawn include Star Wars: Tarkin, Star Wars: Heir To The Jedi and Star Wars: Lords Of The Sith.

Star Wars EU 460x700 Lucasfilm Confirms STAR WARS Expanded Universe Has Been Thrown Out

Well, there you have it. Now we have two continuities of Star Wars stories: the main canon and what I’m calling the “book universe,” which will encompass all the Star Wars novels, comics, video games and other media of the past. Look, we knew that the post-ROTJ stories were going be pushed aside since they would be telling original stories. The way I see it, if this new content ends up disappointing, at least you have the stories of the past to fall back upon.

Personally, I was never brave enough to wade into the post-ROTJ stories past the Thrawn trilogy. There was just so much of it! However, I did read my fair share of pre-A New Hope stories, and unless future material directly contradicts the historical stories like The Old Republic or Darth Bane, I still consider those canon. Shoot, I probably just jinxed that, didn’t I?

Are you ready for the biggest Marvel event to date? Well here is my review of the prologue that will set the whole thing in motion. Read on to find out more.

“IT’S THE PROLOGUE TO THE BIGGEST MARVEL SERIES OF THE SUMMER! WHO IS THE WATCHER? That’s what Nova is wondering after his latest brush with the moon-dwelling enigma he’s encountered before! But what he discovers will have a profound effect on the young hero, as well as priming the pump for the most cataclysmic event in Marvel history! WHAT DID HE SEE?”

Okay when I heard about the premise of Original Sin, I thought it sounded so cool and detail 1 461x700 Original Sin #0 Reviewthat it was going to be amazing. This issue is mostly a prologue to the story that will set into motion a tidal wave of problems. The issue starts with our young Nova who is wandering the stars when he runs into The Watcher. This is where he learns some of the great things that The Watcher can do. The chemistry between these two is really nice the way that they talk and share in this experience is nice. It shows a little different side to both characters, especially The Watcher, who is always a little off.

Now, I will give you a full disclaimer, while this issue is very informative about The Watcher and Nova, it is a little anti-climatic which can disappoint some people, but this is just the prologue so well will have to judge after it really gets going.

The writing for this is issue is quite nice. Mark Waid has a nice way of giving us the perspective of Nova. The issue is written through his voice and adds a childlike wonder to the whole piece. It is a nice touch to the story because of the omnipresence of The Watcher. Jim Cheung and Paco Medina add a very nice touch to issue as artists. They give us this vast world to see in different colors and perspectives. It is a very nice touch.

Original Sin #0 is a great start to a huge event that will change the Marvel Universe.

I just made the dopest shoes ever in all of the multi-verse and I’m going to share my secrets.  I love Spidey, especially Miles Morales, so why not put him all over my feet?  Welcome to greatest DIY tutorial ever!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Supplies:

  • A pair of white canvas shoes- I bought laceless so I wouldn’t have to color around the holes (and cause I’m too lazy to tie my shoes).  You can buy Converses if you are fancy, but I am cheap so I bought Airwalkers from Payless.
  • Permanent fabric markers (red and black)
  • Scissors
  • Cardboard for stencils
  • water proofing spray (This is optional if you feel like being super protective.)

Instructions:

  • Make sure your shoes aren’t dirty.

2013 11 29 21.03.39 590x331 Spider Man DIY Shoes

  • Cut out a stencil for the eyes, and place them on the shoes side by side so they resemble his iconic mask.

2013 11 29 21.06.00 590x331 Spider Man DIY Shoes

  • Trace around the stencils using a red marker. (I traced with a pencil first, but mistakenly pressed too hard. It was a pain in the touchas to erase those markings, so if you use a pencil, press lightly.)
  • Draw the webs in red (again, you can lightly outline the webs in pencil first).  Always start with the lighter color first because you can color over mistakes with the black marker later.

2013 11 29 21.23.58 393x700 Spider Man DIY Shoes

  • Color the area between the webs black.

coloring process 590x198 Spider Man DIY Shoes

  • Live, love, laugh, recolor the whole damn thing over again two times and/or spray it down with water proofing spray.  I did three coats of the paint because I loved the shoes so much that I wanted to make sure they last.  It also made the colors much deeper with each coat.  It took a long, long time, but it was so worth it.

Miles is one of my favorite characters and now I get to rock one-of-a-kind shoes showing my love for him.  You can also use this method to make other designs on shoes or even just draw comic characters all over them.  Have fun.

Add one more superhero to this DC Comics team-up movie. Variety is reporting that theater actor Ray Fisher has been cast as Cyborg in the Man of Steel sequel, tentatively titled Batman vs. Superman. It hasn’t been clarified whether Fisher will in fact play the robotic superhero or just his civilian identity Victor Stone. The article source states that while Cyborg won’t have a major part in the film, he will have ”a much more significant role as Warner and D.C. develop more films related to the Justice League universe.”

ray fisher 590x332 CYBORG Blasts His Way Into BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN

While Cyborg has existed since 1980 and was a well-known member of the Teen Titans, he’s risen to prominence since 2011′s New 52 comic relaunch. In the revised DC continuity, he’s a founding member of the Justice League. S.T.A.R. Labs, the research facility where he gained his cybernetic implants, made several cameos in Man of Steel. Henry Cavill recently expressed  how well the character could fit into the film.

I think he would create an incredible bridge between superheroes and humanity

Cyborg 590x279 CYBORG Blasts His Way Into BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN

Cyborg joins Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman in Batman vs. Superman, although characters like Flash, Aquaman and Green Lantern have been rumored as well. This casting lends credit to the idea that many fans have this this film is a “Justice League-lite” story. Obviously the writers are setting him up to be one of the main Justice League members, which likely means he’ll be taking Martian Manhunter’s spot. Damn, I was hoping to see DC’s martian mascot get some time on the big screen.

However, with three of the most famous superheroes in the world already leading this film, hopefully we’ll only see Victor Stone. During the film’s climax, a.k.a. Batman and Superman handing a beatdown to Eisenb…I mean, Luthor, Stone will somehow be injured during the ensuing chaos. This will lead to his father saving his life at S.T.A.R. Labs and becoming a superhero in Justice League. Hey, at least with him around, they’ll never need to call a computer repair guy.

While attending this year’s Amazing Arizona Comic Con I was able to sit down with scribe Eric M. Esquivel and discuss his future and a bit of his past endeavors!

UTF: Let me start with the big question: What are you up to in 2014?

Loki Ragnarok and Role 1 C 150x150 EXCLUSIVE: Eric M. Esquivel talks LOKI: RAGNAROK AND ROLLEric M. Esquivel: After Thor: Unkillable Thunder Christ, Boom Studios liked that book a lot and they hired me to do a title called Loki: Ragnarock and Roll. It’s Loki joining a metal band and accruing worshipers on earth and becoming the most powerful god of all time.

UTF: That sounds great. Any other projects lined up in 2014?

Loki Ragnarok and Role Sample 150x150 EXCLUSIVE: Eric M. Esquivel talks LOKI: RAGNAROK AND ROLLEric M. Esquivel: Yeah so the Loki book comes out February 19. It’s a 4-issue mini-series. That’s going to be a lot of fun. I also just finished Dark Queen through Zenescope Entertainment, which was a one-shot, and I have also taken over a book over there. It’s not announced yet. I am doing a little run which will be cool and a couple of Monkey Brain anthologies too. One in October and one in December, so keep your eye out.

UTF: It sounds like a great year for you, but let me ask the basics. How did you get started in the comic industry?

GFT Dark Queen 150x150 EXCLUSIVE: Eric M. Esquivel talks LOKI: RAGNAROK AND ROLLEric M. Esquivel: I started self-publishing when I was about 15, and I made the books that I wanted to read as a fan, the comics that weren’t out there yet that I was looking for. I handed those off to editors at every company that I enjoyed and miraculously got some work that way. It took about a decade for me to get into mainstream comics, but I’m here now, and I live in L.A. and it’s my only job and it’s a lot of fun.

UTF: So if you were to give advice to anyone who’s trying to get into the industry, our fellow fanboys and fangirls who are just chomping at the bits, what would you say to them?

Thor Unkillable Thunder Christ 460x700 EXCLUSIVE: Eric M. Esquivel talks LOKI: RAGNAROK AND ROLLEric M. Esquivel: Before I quit my day job, I was making comics at night and I had a day job during the day, obviously. That’s when you have those things. I had a lot of fun doing that, and I thought it would be better afterwards. It’s not. it’s kind of the same. Just enjoy the work. Make comics not for the glory, not for the money, but because you can’t do anything else and that’s what you want to do with your life.

Also, relish that you have no editor and that you can be entirely who you are. You might be able to tell the best stories of your life right now before you break in, so just be aware of that. And if your fans want to find me, I am online at emecomics.com or my name on Twitter,

I want to take the time to thank Mr. Eric M. Esquivel for chatting with me. It was a pleasure, I did pick up a copy of Loki: Ragnarok and Roll #1, trust me guys this is a must own from this particular talent!

So what did you think of the interview my fellow fanboys and fangirls?

Sound off with your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below!

Friday the 13th has always been a horror film icon, ruling the big screen. It seems the franchise’s next conquest could be the small screen!

Crystal Lake Entertainment has reportedly made a deal with Oasis Films to create a “dramatic” series based off the popular horror series. To the caution of some fans, it seems the show will be quite different from the films; reported to be “contemporary”, focusing on “eclectic characters”, the executive producer, Sean S. Cunningham has mentioned that the show will go in “exciting new directions”, which is usually code for, “we’re changing stuff for no reason!”.

Sci-fi writers Bill Basso and Jordu Schell have been tasked with scripting duties, which will apparently feature Jason in various time periods. Does this mean time travel? Will Jason’r origin be altered? Does he have tons of ancestors? I don’t know, but I have a feeling these alterations will just scare fans off.

11 JASON Will Torment New Campers in FRIDAY THE 13TH TV Series?

Interestingly, a remake was announced a while back. Its unknown if this show will tie in with that, or not.

The Friday the 13th franchise already has twelve whole films, some comics, and some video games. In the 90s, there was a horror TV show named Friday the 13th: The Series, but infamously, it had no connection to the films. Let’s hope this show ends up differently, eh?

Are you guys excited for this? Or are you tired of mediocre shows based off films?

While Avengers: Age of Ultron will be have many of Marvel’s famous characters fighting Ultron in 2015, there was one notable hero who was left off the roster: Ant-Man, specifically Hank Pym. While Ant-Man will be released two months after Avengers: AOU, Pym will not team-up with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and not have any connection to the insane robot, despite the fact that he was its creator in he comics. In an interview with Empire Magazine, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed why Pym was left out of the Avengers sequel.

It was two things – a story Edgar wanted to tell that we’ll see with Michael Douglas and Paul Rudd, and now we’re 11 films in, it’s looking at the characters we’ve already introduced who already have the technology and the brains to do…certain things [Laughs].

This is indirectly referring to Tony Stark, who’s been revealed to be Ultron’s creator in Avengers: AOU. Along with his science buddy Bruce Banner, it looks like there wasn’t enough room to fit another genius in with them. Plus, the movie’s already introducing four new super powered characters (that we know of). Five might have been pushing it. Still, though it may make logical sense, for the comic community it will be weird to see Stark putting Ultron together rather than Pym.

ant man ultron 590x393 Theres Too Many Smart Guys In AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON For ANT MAN To Appear

Feige also revealed that not much of the movie had to be changed to fit the Marvel Cinematic Universe, give that Edgar Wright has been working on the film since 2006.

We changed, frankly some of the MCU to accommodate this version of Ant-Man. Knowing what we wanted to do with Edgar and with Ant-Man, going years and years back, helped to dictate what we did with the roster for Avengers the first time. It was a bit of both in terms of his idea for the Ant-Man story influencing the birth of the MCU in the early films leading up to Avengers.

ant man test footage 600x255 590x250 Theres Too Many Smart Guys In AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON For ANT MAN To Appear

This was a given. Although Marvel has these decades-spanning plans for how their movies fit together, they’ve also been good about keeping true to the visions of these writers and directors. Since Ant-Man has always been a solo film, the roster for The Avengers had to match up with what Wright and Marvel were slowly putting together. It’s also intriguing that much like Captain America: The First Avenger, Ant-Man will help shape the modern MCU.

However, that doesn’t mean that Hank Pym and/or Scott Lang can’t appear in Avengers 3 or a future team-up movie. Internet, put together one of those online petitions. Those usually work, right?

Thanos, the Mad Titan who first revealed his Purple hued head at the end of The Avengers, has finally been cast in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since this massive meanie shows up a time or two in Guardians of the Galaxy, I think it’s safe to say that’s where we’ll first see him. Now, I’m not certain if he’s an actor with practical effects, a motion capture performance, or an entirely CGI creation, so my info’s really limited.

Here’s what Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige said:

crop2 ThanosQuest 1 Cover1 Thanos Cast! Vin Diesel Is That You?

“There is an actor. I’m not sure we want to announce it yet.”

Although, if the Thanos actor was walking around set of James Gunn’s GOTG last summer, I like to think that our internet sleuths would’ve figured him out. Unless an actor already cast in that film was doubly cast to portray Thanos. As you know, Vin Diesel will play the Space-Faring Ent Groot in the flick. But you might not know that Diesel’s proclaimed he’ll have a bigger role in the Marvel universe.

We’ve all assumed he meant a superhero role, like Blackbolt in an inevitable Inhumans film. But Thanos… that’s a villain worthy of Diesel’s range. I don’t mean that in any snooty way, but Diesel really shines as the gruff, tough type, as we’ve seen with his Riddick Trilogy. Thanos, with his one-note nihilism, could be the perfect marriage. Assuming, of course, that Joss Whedon will direct The Avengers 3, where Thanos is rumored to have an even larger role. One-note villains are his thing, after all.

Why, oh why, must Ultron be ‘funny’? The adamantium shelled robot is a mass murdering, cold hearted, Oedipal super villain who’s never shown an ounce of wit in his entire 50 year history as a comic book character. So why, oh why, would such a compellingly evil nemesis require humor? And rest assured, fandon, situationally funny Ultron is what we’re going to get.

Joss Whedon’s proclaimed as much in a recent interview about Avengers: Age of Ultron

“”But last time I had all of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes versus one British character actor, and I needed more conflict. I’m having a blast with Ultron. He’s not a creature of logic – he’s a robot who’s genuinely disturbed. We’re finding out what makes him menacing and at the same time endearing and funny and strange and unexpected, and everything a robot never is.”"

JossWhedon reuters 1200 Ultron Will Be Funny. Joss Whedon Made Ultron Funny!

Hasn’t Marvel Studios learned anything from Captain America: The Winter Soldier? That movie was debatably the best solo outing the House of Ideas has produced since its inception, and it relied on plot and character development instead of basic humor. With every other movie, Marvel’s relied on humor to sweeten their otherwise drab flicks.

“I know this is just another superhero movie, and I know they’re ridiculous characters with ridiculous costumes, but here’s a handful of laughs to make it all that much better.”

And I get it. Most movie goers love Marvel films because of the humor, but The Winter Soldier proved that we’re perfectly capable of tackling even the CHEESIEST of characters in a very sincere, compelling way. Humor is the easy way out. It’s what Marvel scoops onto their flicks when the risk of this goofy supervillain or that wacky space hero is just TOO bizarre. But they shouldn’t.

That’s why a ‘funny’ Ultron really grinds my gears. The character’s an absolutely menacing, blood-curdling murderer in the comics. I’m not one to bash silver screen adaptations for their fidelity to the source material, but the whole appeal of Ultron is the “creation kills creator”. Any humor surrounding Ultron — whether flat out jokes, those awkward pauses Whedon loves so much, or unrequited one-liners — is contrived. Inauthentic. Unnecessary.

It’s not within the character to be funny. It’s not within the situations to be funny.

I know Whedon loves humor, and I know the general public will eat up another funny Avengers flick, but I’m “meh”. Call me spoiled, call me rotten, but I can’t wait for the day when a more serious set of Action film makers like the Russo Bros to inherit the reins.

Welcome to With Great Chutzpah Comes Great Responsibility, your every other week dose of Jews and comics!

One of my favorite characters has always been the Black Panther. The more I learned and studied my own Jewish culture, the more I connected to the Black Panther, AKA T’Challa. He is one of Marvel’s greatest heroes, a man who doesn’t budge on his ideals, is loyal to his people, and lives in the modern world but respects his history. But what type of environment would produce a hero such as this? Wakanda, the ideal country in a sick world. I immediately connected Wakanda to Israel, not the Israel that exists, but the Israel I wish existed, the Israel we dream of.

This piece is in no way going to try and debate current Israeli policy or politics. It will look at the country at its most idealistic- Israel at its best, the Israel that cannot exist in a real world, but the one we strive for.

Although I have never heard of anyone connecting Wakanda to Israel, I believe it was in the minds of Jack Kirby and Stan Lee when Wakanda was created. Kirby, born 1917, and Lee, born 1922, were the kiddos of Jewish Immigrants. Wakanda first appeared in 1966, prior to the Six-Day War and any peace treaties between Israel and its neighboring countries. Wakanda is an African country that is strong and technologically advanced, with its own natural resources. It is a valued world power, respects its roots and never budges on its values. Wakanda must have been an incredible dream for the two Jewish creators. The spirit of Wakanda is the spirit of Israel.

This article will look at the similarities between the two countries and how Israel should strive to be like Wakanda.

wakanda The Spirit of Wakanda is the Spirit of Israel

Wakanda is rich in vibranium. For people who somehow don’t know what vibranium is- it is essentially the coolest metal ever (k, adamantium is a tad bit cooler). Vibranium can absorb soundwaves and other vibrations. How strong is it? Captain America’s shield is made of vibranium. Wakanda is the only place you can find it but because vibranium is so powerful, Wakanda has been careful not to let it fall into the wrong hands. It has only sold small quantities and used the money to create one of the greatest education systems in the world and make the country a modernized utopia. On the other hand, when early Zionists immigrated to Israel, they tried to make the “land flowing with milk and honey” a reality. What they found was desert with few natural resources. They had to become agricultural experts, buying the inexpensive desert land and turning it into greenhouses. These early Israelis probably dreamt of finding natural resources similar to vibranium in the brutal desert terrain. Although they do not have vibranium, Israel has done a pretty good job without it. Israel has revolutionized farming methods and now produces 95% of its own food requirements.

wakanda map The Spirit of Wakanda is the Spirit of Israel

Both countries are also itsy bitsy. See Wakanda in blue.

Wakanda has always been one of the most advanced countries in the entire world, a land that merges modernity without disrespecting their ancient culture. Wakanda is the perfect example of a futuristic country that respects its “tradition.” (Yes! I made a Tevye reference.) Wakanda has the world’s greatest scientists and inventors who can second as historians. It is a utopian society that moves forward by learning from and respecting its past. Israel is also a mix of the ancient and technological. In Jerusalem, you can go from a Yeshiva to a top rated university on one bus. Israel has many of the world’s greatest scholars on Torah as well as the largest per capita number of biotech start-ups in the world. Israeli companies and scholars are making the world’s most technological advances. Sadly, the culture of Israel has always been torn between modernity and ancient history, the secular and the religious. The debate on what it means to have a “Jewish” country has been one of the strongest since day one (and Jews know how to debate). Israel has a ways to go to find the balance that Wakanda has.

Bast- The Panther G-D

All of Wakanda’s policies are based upon the principles of their ancient spirituality. Wakandan’s live by sacred codes of conduct, and if you don’t like it, the Wakandans don’t care. They never attack first, but if you mess with their country Wakanda has one of the world’s top defense systems. Wakanda will not budge on their spiritual values. Their spirituality defines their international relations as well as their internal actions. Israel has done a lot of wonderful things and many of our actions can set positive examples for other countries, but we certainly have a lot of improvement to make to match Wakanda. Israel has been influenced by outside powers. Although we sided with the winning power in the cold war, we still sit uncomfortably with America’s influence over our policies. Meanwhile, Wakanda has complete economic and political independence. They learn right and wrong from their spirituality, not earthly powers. Wakanda is a wonderful example of a moral “light unto the nations,” the same way Israel should always strive to be.

Wakanda is a land of hope. It is a nation untouched by slavery and colonialism. It shows the potential of a Black country if it were to grow separate from racism. Lee and Kirby were clearly also influenced by the Black freedom movement in Africa, third world revolutionaries throughout the world and the Black Power Movement at home; Wakanda is an image of the strength and potential of African culture. This same hope is what the idea of Israel gives Jews around the world. After 2,000 years of being murdered, stereotyped and victimized, Jews can now have responsibility for their own land and destiny, instead of living under the rule of others. Over 16 thousand Jews make Aaliyah (immigrate) each year. Israel prides itself on being a refuge to any Jew dealing with anti-Semitism throughout the world. Both Wakanda and Israel give hope and pride to historically oppressed people.

Today, Israel is no longer considered a third world country. We are respected for our advancements and hold strength in world politics. Meanwhile, we have made many mistakes like any earthly country, and this article has not even begun to touch on the peace process with our neighbors and cousins. We have much we need to improve on, much we can learn from Wakanda.

5 Reasons MARVEL STUDIOS Should Bring SPIDER-MAN to TV http://www.unleashthefanboy.com/editorial/5-reasons-marvel-studios-bring-spider-man-tv/99058 http://www.unleashthefanboy.com/editorial/5-reasons-marvel-studios-bring-spider-man-tv/99058#comments Wed, 23 Apr 2014 21:22:42 +0000 http://www.unleashthefanboy.com/?p=99058 Marvel Studios recently expanded the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the realm of TV, and while their premiere television series, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, got off to a bit of a slow start it’s finally began to come into it’s own, but still it isn’t just quite what the fans were hoping for. Marvel Studios recently expanded the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the realm of TV, and while their premiere television series, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, got off to a bit of a slow start it’s finally began to come into it’s own, but still it isn’t just quite what the fans were hoping for. Marvel regained all television rights to their most recognisable star in 2009, and unless there is a specific clause whereby they can’t portray any live action versions (a clause Marvel would be pretty insane to accept) we here at UTF think they are missing the obvious solution to their weekly episodic woes, and here’s 5 reasons why…

5 – Name Recognition

spidey5 590x245 5 Reasons MARVEL STUDIOS Should Bring SPIDER MAN to TV

Whilst we don’t actually condone calling the show ‘Spider-Man’ a new TV series starring the web-head would not only get people talking, it would get people watching, the same people that go out in their hundreds of thousands to see the web-slinger at the cinema every time he has a new silver screen outing. We have no doubt the first episode would break all kinds of records, and what better advert could you have for an up coming movie than a cameo appearance tying into what could potentially be one of the most watched shows on TV!

4 – Expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe

marvel 590x245 5 Reasons MARVEL STUDIOS Should Bring SPIDER MAN to TV

Although he could never appear on the big screen alongside his fellow heroes a Spider-Man show would open the doors to exploring the fantastic array of characters not quite big enough for the big screen. Spidey has one of the richest rogues galley, but it doesn’t end there, Spider-Man is notorious for his team ups and there aren’t many characters with a larger and more developed supporting cast in the comics.

3 – Multi Demographic Appeal

spidey6 590x245 5 Reasons MARVEL STUDIOS Should Bring SPIDER MAN to TV

Teen drama, Super-heroics, Action, Adventure, Spider-Man has it all! If the right balance is struck then it could appeal to young and old, male and female alike. Think of a show that wasn’t just about Peter Parker and his secret identity but a supporting cast you also care about, a mix of Spider-Man loves Mary Jane and Ultimate Spider-Man, a show that focuses as much on the other characters and the man behind the mask as it does on the hero itself… the potential is enormous.

2 – Giving the Fans What they Want!

spidey2 590x245 5 Reasons MARVEL STUDIOS Should Bring SPIDER MAN to TV

Fans don’t want to see just the ordinary people it this marvellous (sorry for the pun) world, they want the spectacular, the astonishing, the…. amazing! It’s taken them a while to get there but AoS is embracing the fantastical side of the universe more and more, but us fanboys don’t just want glimpses, we want to revel in it! No Smallville nonsense here, we want our hero suited and booted from the get go, and who better than ol webhead? The budget wouldn’t [always] have to be huge and as much time (if not more) could be spent on small screen friendly villains such as Tombstone and Kingpin for the season spanning big bad with some nice FX payoffs thrown in along the way.

A fitting ending to the first ‘Eternal Emperor’ story line is both impactful and somber as the Eternal Warrior reveals that saving his people and his beloved granddaughter Caroline may spell the beginning of the end for a future generation.

Official description from VALIANT:
Is the Eternal Warrior finally out of time? Every moment in the centuries-long life of Gilad Anni-Padda has led to this moment. Far removed from the modern day, standing resolute at the last tattered edge of the civilization, the Eternal Emperor of 4001 A.D. is about to make the hardest choice of all – and two thousand years of Valiant heroes will feel the fallout.

Writer Greg Pak has done a masterful job launching readers 2000 years in the future with Valiant’s favorite immortal the Eternal Warrior. The journey to save the world form nuclear disaster has been concise and engaging story throughout. Pak sets readers up for a glorious happy ending and succeeds. But he also foreshadows a quite depressing bigger picture as the long-term result of his effort. Honestly, it’s beyond depressing, it’s downright heartbreaking, but in the best possible way. Pak shows through Gilad Anni-Padda’s eyes the thousands of years of cyclical violence and human destruction he bears witness to and knows may never end. For a story so grounded it’s overall implications are beyond the here and now.

EW 008 COVER Eternal Warrior #8 ReviewGilad’s love for his granddaughter and possibly only heir to his immortality is palpable and heartfelt. Pak uses that to tremendous effectiveness by the end of the story. While the action has been outstanding and the quest of Gilad noble it is ultimately it’s own worst enemy. Though it all Gilad knows sacrifices must be made but the lingering question still remains. “Is any of this worth it?” The answer may surprise you.

Robert Gill continues some top notch work with the story. He has a tremendous sense of balance between what feels like a land and time long ago but still manages to remind you that this is the future. The action is always good but what Gill captures most is the playfulness of Gilad’s niece Caroline and the shift and change she experiences through the ordeal of surviving a nuclear threat. He captures beautifully the youthful exuberance of Caroline and the sadness of a warrior in Gilad.

Pak’s point is the change in Caroline and on the surface it’s pure happiness but underneath lies the dread of human nature. All this could get lost in the action and excitement but Pak punctuates this arc perfectly. The Eternal Warrior is fantastic storytelling with meaning and in the end heart. This entire run is a feather in Valiant’s cap and a must read for fans of comic books that go beyond expectations.
