Hans Zimmer’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Theme Sucks

We’ve just caught a first whiff of Hans Zimmer’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 theme and it’s most definitely a stinker!

Now, before a horde of angry fanboys march on the Sicilian Headquarters of Unleash The Fanboy like so many irate Tolkien-esque orcs on our proverbial Pelennor (sorry, just had to say it, in a LOTR mood today), I should preface this entire article with a sincere declaration: I love Hans Zimmer. He, along with the many musicians who help him compose, has orchestrated some of the most memorable modern scores with work in The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Last Samurai, The Thin Red Line… the list goes on and on. In recent years, with his work on comic book films, he’s become a newer Danny Elfman, that composer who so famously penned the soundtracks for Tim Burton’s Batman, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, and Ang Lee’s Hulk.

So, when Sony decided to hire Hans Zimmer for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, I naturally assumed that he’d manifest brilliance in symphonic form… but he hasn’t. Check out this sample of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Score below.

It’s not very good, is it? Spider-Man is meant to be a strange hero, something which was perfectly translated into Danny Elfman’s 2002 theme. Zimmer seems to have created an overly regal tune, which would find a better home with a hero like Superman or Captain America, not this arachnid themed do-gooder.

Besides that point, though, it all sounds a bit too much like 90’s computer conference; that completely artificial music meant to introduce the latest wave of technological junk as a sea of weirdos cheer on their favorite gadget guru. Or, perhaps, Zimmer’s found inspiration in TNT’s basketball broadcasts, and decided that would be the perfect thematic music for Spider-Man? Oh wait, I’ve found the perfect one: the theme sound EXACTLY like the introduction overture to every NASA documentary ever made.

The point of the matter is… this doesn’t sound like Spider-Man. Check out Danny Elfman’s 2002 theme and compare. Let me know what you think.
