War For Olympus Coming To WONDER WOMAN This Summer

Since the beginning of The New 52, Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang have carved for Wonder Woman her own world full of gods, Greek mythology and gore. Lots and lots of gore.

Of course, the most integral part of Wonder Woman’s new world is her deep connection to the Greek gods of Mount Olympus and you know the deal with those pesky gods; their drama is just exploding all over the place.

Coming this summer, Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang will be giving us the conclusion of their critically acclaimed and successful run with a war of gods for the control of Olympus.

Speaking to Newsarama, Chiang said:

We’ve put a bunch of dominos together, and we’re finally going to knock them over, you know? We’ve been doing that for a couple years, and now, we’re starting to see things fall. And it’s really satisfying to see the pattern that it’s making, and the other thing that we’ve been able to bring out, adding certain kinds of symbolism, certain kinds of beings”

In Wonder Woman #28, we last saw Apollo sacrifice himself and blow up Mount Olymus in order to stop the First Born from taking over Olympus. But that’s not it, because Azzarello says the theme of death and sacrifice is an ongoing theme in Wonder Woman, and Chiang said, “That’s one of the things that we bring as a team to it, is like, working together to try to bring out those smaller moments and make them bigger, and more meaningful. It’s not just, you know, superheroes flying straight at the reader, with a bunch of characters dying. You know?”

Wonder Woman hasn’t had the most screen time compared to other characters, (looking at you, Batman and Superman) but her only solo comic book gives readers a deep look into her world of gods, politics and war. For the past three years, readers have seen a side to Wonder Woman that they have never seen before.

Ever since Wonder Woman became the new god of war, there’s been a struggle for her and for the creators to create a balance between her traditionally hopeful and compassionate side and her new role as the god of war.

It should be very interesting to see Wonder Woman taking part in an actual war to defend Mount Olympus, and how the definition of the word “war” is going to be understood.
