TOEI Producing AVENGERS ANIME Series!

It was bound to happen eventually, but Avengers will be getting an anime series in Japan. Titled Disc Wars: Avengers, It will be produced and animated by Toei Animation (Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, Toriko) and will air in Japan next Spring, and will presumably run for 12 episodes (although I hope it’ll last longer). Bandai will be in charge of merchandising (get ready for tons of toys).

The plot summary is already released, but unfortunately, I think it sounds a bit…weird, and not really in a good way:

In the anime, portable capturing devices known as “Discs” were developed to capture evil villains. However, thanks to Loki’s machinations, both villains and heroes are sealed up in these Discs and scattered around the world. Amid the chaos, five youths obtained the power to restore these Disc-sealed heroes through a program called “Biocode.” These youths received five discs that Spider-Man, who narrowly escaped being sealed himself, retrieved. Thus, these five can restore Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and Wasp — the Avengers!

Honestly, I’m a bit concerned. According to the released info, this anime will be aimed at a younger audience than the previous Marvel anime. The previous anime were “seinen”, but the new one seems like it’ll try to be toyetic, and if they really shove it down our throats, that’ll get old fast. Also, it seems they’re trying to add annoying kids to the cast, when they clearly aren’t needed!

On the other hand, we’re also getting some interesting news out of this. As I previously stated, Toei Animation will be handling production. But MADhouse has handled all the Marvel anime in the past. This will be the first time that Toei handles a Marvel anime, so only time will tell which company does a better job.

Another interesting thing to note is the character roster. For example, we have Wasp instead of Black Widow. At the same time, no Hank Pym. And apparently, Spider-Man will appear, but no Hawkeye? Of course, more characters might be gradually revealed, so we’ll have to stay tuned!

Also, since this anime will aim younger, I guess unlike, say, the Wolverine anime, this one will be able to air on Disney XD.

So…will you watch this? Or do you think Disc Wars: Avengers will be even worse than Ultimate Spider-Man and Hulk and the Agents of SMASH?
