THE FLASH Casts Patrick Sabongui As Central City Police Captain

The Central City Police Department is now under new management. It’s been announced that Patrick Sabongui (Stargate: Atlantis, Fringe) will guest-star in The Flash pilot as David Singh, the Central City Police Captain. If the pilot gets ordered to series, his role could be expanded to recurring status. Sabongui joins John Wesley Shipp and Michelle Harrison as a guest-star, and will appear alongside the main cast of Grant Gustin, Jesse L. Martin, Rick Cosnett, Danielle Panabaker, Candice Patton, Carlos Valdes and Tom Cavanagh.

I knew it was a matter of time before Singh was announced. Some might not remember, but when Barry appeared on Arrow last year, he was seen apologizing to Captain Singh over the phone for traveling to Starling City without permission. Once the pilot was announced, I knew Singh had to play a role in it somehow. After all, just because you’re a young, hotshot forensic investigator doesn’t mean you don’t require supervision.

In the comics, Singh is actually the crime lab director while Darryl Frye is the police captain. However, since Frye’s role as Barry’s legal guardian and mentor has been replaced in the show by Martin’s Detective West, the writers probably felt Singh was a better fit for police captain.

Another thing to note is in the New 52, Singh was in a secret relationship with Hartley Rathaway, the reformer Pied Piper. Rathaway is confirmed to be a member of the main cast, but it hasn’t been revealed who’s playing him. It’s possible that if the pilot gets ordered to series, the show will pair the two of them together. If Rathaway ends up becoming The Pied Piper, that would be an interesting side story to explore. An officer of the law dating a criminal. Not exactly the ideal relationship.
