REANIMATOR #1 Review

Herbert West is back but this time he is getting into more trouble than resurrecting the dead but this time he has some help. Read on to find out more.

The official description from Dynamite:

Dr. Herbert West, The Reanimator, returns! Setting up shop in New Orleans, the brilliant Dr. West continues his life’s work: the revival of the dead by purely chemical means. To accomplish this task, he recruits Susan Greene, a young and wide-eyed pharmacologist fascinated by his macabre experiments. Initially unfazed by West’s unorthodox practices (including how he funds his research – by selling zombie brain fluid as a narcotic), Susan may regret her scientific curiosity as sinister forces – those aligned with Elder Gods and Haitian Voodoo – begin to align against the Reanimator!

The world is a lot different than the last time that we saw the good doctor and we have some new and interesting things happening, including, a new protégé named Susan Greene. She becomes his new assistant and while she is hesitant to fully commit she is intrigued and that intrigue has brought her to him but the doctors new projects cost money, money he makes selling a special drug to a cult that has nefarious purposes. This causes a new drug war and the main target is the good doctor. Also, Susan learns that her meeting the doctor wasn’t an accident.

Keith Davidsen does a good job of continuing the story of the doctor and brings some new elements in. It is a little boring in the middle but it is still a lot of fun. It is good to see the character back in action with a interesting plot that will for an exciting series.

Randy Valiente has a great drawing style for a horror comic. It is really detailed and pretty dark, which is good, but it’s not too dark, which is also great!

Reanimator #1 is a slow start but one that will continue to be great.
