Peggy Carter Sneaks Into AGENTS OF SHIELD Before AGENT CARTER Premieres

While Agents of SHIELD will introduce a horde of new faces in its premiere, a couple familiar characters will also stop by, including  Adrian Pasdar as Glenn Talbot and Patton Oswalt as Eric…sorry, Billy Koenig. Whether friendly or antagonistic, these characters will each play a certain role when the show returns on September 23. Today, Marvel released an episode synopsis of what to expect from there premiere, new status quo and all.

Coulson and his team are now wanted fugitives with limited resources–but that’s not stopping them from keeping the world safe from powerful and unseen threats everywhere. However, with new members they hardly know, will S.H.I.E.L.D. ever be trusted again?

However, it’s not this vague plot description that’s the interesting part of this press release. Buried among the guest stars is someone who we’ve seen many times, both on film and soon in her own TV show: Haley Atwell as Peggy Carter! It’s unknown whether this will be post-World War II Peggy or old woman Peggy. As most of you know, Atwell will reprise Peggy in Agent Carter, an 8-episode TV series that will air in January during Agents Of SHIELD‘s midseason break.

I’m leaning towards Atwell’s appearance being a flashback. It should be noted that this is also the episode that Crusher Creel, a.k.a. the Absorbing Man, makes his debut. Perhaps the agents find a clue to defeating him in a mission file from the ’40s, which segues us into a flashback showing Peggy and other agents dealing with a similar threat. Or perhaps it’s something as simple as her appearing on a film reel, like the one that showed in the Captain America exhibit at the Smithsonian.

Regardless, this guest appearance will double as a tease for Atwell’s spinoff series. The non-geeky Agents of SHIELD audience (yes, they exist) might not know about Agent Carter yet, so this should clue them in on what’s coming. Better yet, maybe they’ll air a teaser trailer for the series after the episode! No, better not get my hopes up. This guest appearance will suffice…for now.
