Jon Spaihts’ DOCTOR STRANGE Script Is Not An Origin Story

Aside from being directed by Scott Derrickson, very little has actually been announced about the upcoming Doctor Strange flick.  Appearing on Meet the Movie Press Devin Faraci of Bad Ass Digest says the current Doctor Strange script is totally different than the original script by Joshua Oppenheimer that Marvel has had since 2010.   Faraci states,

“So, for Dr. Strange they’ve had a script in-house forever. It is a pretty standard origin story for Doctor Strange. It’s got Baron Mordo as the bad guy. That’s all gone. Marvel’s new thing is no more origin stories. So, Dr. Strange movie no longer has an origin. It begins in medias res. It’s got Dr. Strange already established as the Sorcerer Supreme, and it is a totally new script. Jon Spaihts is working totally new, on his own, without any of the previous stuff. Not even touching the previous script.”
As a person who is generally not a fan of origin stories for characters I have known for decades I hope this news pans out.  While I’m sure there will be references or flashbacks to how Strange became the Sorcerer Supreme, the audience doesn’t need to make the full journey with him.  Of course if Marvel really wanted to shake things up Stephen Strange could become Stephanie Strange for the film version.
