Guardians of the Galaxy has achieved yet another box office victory! The out-of-nowhere champion of summer blockbusters has become the first movie of the year to surpass $300 million at the US box office. While not Marvel’s highest grossing film of all time, this is a big success for a movie of an otherwise obscure comic book franchise. The film hasn’t even begun to lose steam and its success is one the most surprising triumphs. When the beginning of the summer movie season started, no one even considered this film would be such a top contender, but it’s defied the odds and captured everyone’s attention.
It’s no mystery where Guardians‘ appeal and charm come from. This is a an extremely well made movie. Some might call it an escapist movie, and ya know what? They’d be right! No, it’s not devoid of issues and problems that aren’t relatable. Its message of misfits and outcasts banding together isn’t a new one, but somehow the film makes it feel fresh and new and has enough comedy and action woven together in a perfect package.
What’s more is that this feels like what a comic book movie should be! When you read a comic, it’s not only an escape from your everyday mundane life, but it’s a fun, creative, and sometimes gut wrenching experience. Guardians translates this feeling to the big screen perfectly. It’s colorful, action packed, filled with laughs and has just the right dash of emotional trial to keep you invested till the end credits. It doesn’t try to change its characters into something more “dark and edgier,” but instead only increases the entertaining qualities of its characters finding just the right mix for the hardcore crowd and casual audience member. It’s nice to see a good movie doing so well and getting the attention it deserves.
