Donal Logue Joins BATMAN Prequel GOTHAM As Harvey Bullock

This is one Gotham casting announcement that’s definitely not a surprise. It has been announced that Terriers and Sons of Anarchy star Donal Logue will join the Batman prequel series as Detective Harvey Bullock. Bullock is described as Detective James Gordon’s “rough-around-the-edges partner and mentor who plays loose with police procedure, but he gets results … and he does it with old-school, forceful panache.” Logue joins Ben McKenzie, Robin Lord Taylor, Sean Pertwee, Zabryna Guevara and Erin Richards as a series regular.

Logue’s involvement with Gotham was first announced last month when Latino Review’s El Mayimbe scooped that he would play the title role of James Gordon. The Twitterverse immediately took to checking with Logue on this and he denied being offered the Gordon role, stating that he heard they were looking for someone younger. Mayimbe then double-checked with his source and posted a clarification stating that Logue had actually been offered the Bullock role, something that Logue didn’t confirm or deny.

I’m glad that they’re adding Bullock to the show. Outside of the comics and Batman: The Animated Series, Bullock has never appeared in any other medium, and the role of the heavy-set tough detective is always replaced by a different character in the movies. I grew up watching Logue on Grounded for Life and have liked his roles in several other shows (my favorite being a con-artist in the show Monk), so I think he’ll deliver a great performance on the series.

My only complaint is that because this is a Batman prequel show, we’ll never see his reactions to the Caped Crusader’s presence in the city. Bullock’s complaints to Batman’s vigilantism were some of my favorite parts in Batman: The Animated Series. At best, we might get a scene similar to Mask of the Phantasm where Bullock witnesses a pre-Batman disguised Bruce Wayne trying his hand at fighting crime for the first time.
