Ben Affleck Quits BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, Replacement Announced

Warner Bros.’s just announced that Ben Affleck, their controversial choice for Bruce Wayne in Batman vs Superman, has been forced to step down from the project. While this move is destined to spawn a horde of rumors, Warner Bros. has tried to clear up the mess as quickly as possible.

Remember that strange scheduling conflict we heard about earlier in the year? Ben Affleck was contracted to direct the pilot episode of the new Mafia themed tv show The Middle Man, which happened to be at the same time as the Batman vs Superman shoot. Well, we thought Warner Bros. fixed that whole problem, as they postponed the superhero team up flick to allow time for Affleck’s dalliance with television.

I guess we were all wrong, though, as Warner Bros. has cited that as the main reason for Affleck’s departure. Ben Affleck released this statement on twitter.

Which leads me into my next big reveal. Idris Elba. That’s right, the badass actor from Pacific Rim, Thor, and Luthor is our new Batman. Even though I was one of the few folks in love with Ben Affleck’s casting, I’m absolutely THRILLED with Elba. He is the perfect Batman. Between his dark, brooding silver screen personas and his superhero frame, he could very well be the best Bruce Wayne we’ve ever seen.

Again, I’m sad to see Ben Affleck depart Batman vs Superman. I don’t think he deserved all of that fanboy vitriol and he could’ve very well delivered a serviceable version of Bruce Wayne, but I’m kinda sorta glad he’s been forced to step aside. Idris Elba is the ideal Batman. He’s rough. Tough. And kinda suave as f***.

This can’t be real–but if it was then people who didn’t like it would be considered racist for their opinion. I mean, Bruce Wayne was white. Not saying Elba wouldn’t rock the role like a boss but c’mon, people. “You didn’t want Spider-man to be bisexual/gay?! YOU HOMOPHOBE, YOU!” Not really. But he wasn’t that way in the comics.

  Bruce Wayne was a figment and a creation so Elba could become that creation. Why so close minded. How many times have White people portrayed Black People or Native Americans or Latinos in the history of the American Movie.   These are secondary characters that is why it doesn’t matter really if they change the race, nationality, whatever. But to change the race, nationality of the main Character, who everybody is used to seeing a certain way, that would be completely wrong. We all have grown up seeing Superman and Batman as white so that is what we envision in our minds. We see them all the time and they are white. We don’t see the secondary characters all the time so it doesn’t matter if they are white, or black, or Chinese or whatever. They are not who the story is about. If Perry white had been a main character for years and years and had his own back story and they made comic books and movies only about Perry White, and he was a white guy, or a black guy, and we grew up seeing him as such that is what we would expect him to be, not some other race or nationality.
  I may have made sense here and I may have said a whole crap load of nonsense, but I don’t care. That is the way I see it. Batman is white, they need to keep him white. If he were black to begin with then he should stay black, but he wasn’t. Same with Superman, if he had been written and drawn from the beginning as a black man I would hope that they would keep him that way, But he is a white man and has been since the beginning so he needs to stay that way.

        Hal was the second person to carry the name in terms of the comics and he got the ring from Abin Sur who was a Green Lantern before him in terms of continuity, so either way you take it Hal wasn’t the “first”. Alan Scott isn’t a member of the Green Lantern Corps and his ring is powered by magic not will as far as I know but he’s from the Silver Age of comics/Justice Society along with Hourman, The Atom, Wildcat and a bunch of other heroes. He was definitely the first person to be called The Green Lantern.

      You’re missing an important point, namely that these actors played their differing characters for other studios. In MCU, Elba was a Thor character. Likewise Stevenson.

Why do people get so angry if it’s a black guy? Like dude c’mon most of these superheros were made when racism was at it best. Can’t a black person be more then a sidekick (cyborg is a sub-hero and black panther is African not African American). I’m down if they want to change the color of the hero or these old timey names as well. people need to pull there heads out their assess it’s 2014 and the same issues we had in 1900s should not be a issue now. I never see comment this heated when they announce a character as gay but I guess that has nothing to do with the color of your skin.

        Not talking about just comic book movies. Just movies in general. A few that come to mind are Warm Bodies, Lone Ranger, Last Airbender, Prince of Persia, 21, 30 Days of Night (comic), and Argo. It was pretty bad back in the 40’s to 50’s, obviously, but it’s still disappointing that this still goes on, yet I find it hilarious when white people flip out about casting a minority for a “white” role, for example, Thor and Fantastic Four.

  I don’t think people have an elaborately prepared reason why they don’t like a black guy instead of a white. I also don’t think it is racism. I would cringe at the idea that Blade would be remade as a white guy for example, and I am white. I think it has more to do with familiarity and that you have a stable idea about the hero, which pretty much includes how he looks. After all we are really talking about a visual medium here. Sometimes it works, like with Nick Fury for me (as I didn’t read many white Nick Fury comics) and sometimes it doesn’t. I think it is individual thing and what your personal attachment is with the hero. If you are really close to him emotionally I highly doubt you will want him to change. For example I stopped reading the Ultimate spider-man after Miles Morales stepped into the picture. And it’s not because I hate his skin color, it’s because I have an idea about spider-man which I like and I think it is pretty much perfect, and I just don’t want to change it. Also this doesn’t mean others are not allowed to like it.

  honestly man, characters like Batman, race would have no affect on who he is or how he conducts himself. Idris would be an awesome batman regardless of his color in the comics. idris is an amazing actor, i’ve dug his work since his stand out role on “the wire”. the only time changing the race of a character bothers me is when it affects the rest of the story line… like johnny storm in the new fantastic four will be black, but his sister is white with blonde hair…. what the fuck? they should have made reed richards or ben grimm black if they wanted a more diverse cast, but if reed was black they would have had a biracial couple on screen and bigots would have bitched about that too.

The only believable black man would be Wesley Snipes. If you’ve seen him New Jack City, he has the class of Bruce Wayne. And Blade is as impersonal and stoic as Blade? The Batman part is easy today, its Bruce Wayne that’s a takes some real acting chops.

i love idris elba, dont see him as Bruce Wayne though, i dont see him as prince Tchalla either, i would love to see him as John Stewart, i think he “is” green lantern, could be a right fix for Al Simmons, better than Jaime Foxx anyway, and finally, i believe he would make an awesome nick fury, if they replace SLJ, Djimon Hounsou is black panther, sadly he is to old.
I dont have anything with changing the etnicity of the characters, as long as they do it right, for example Heimdall, marvelous , on the other hand, Jhonny Storm, love the guy but i cant understand why the hell they dont cast a black sue????, whats the deal?, they are brothers!!!!, dont tell me they will make him/her adopted, or that they wont be siblings,
The escence of FF is that they are family, is their family dinamic that makes them so great…either way, wrong discussion, Idris is a no go for B.Wayne in my opinion…..and yes, i know this is only an Aprils fool prang but it spawned a pretty interesting discussion!!!!

Yet they are blood relatives, Wentworth Millerand Gabrielle Reece’s are Afro-Caribbean and Daniel Sunjata is African American, What ?!?! Black people can have none black siblings? What!?!? some Black people look like white people? What!?!? African Americans can consistently play other ethnicities like Latino, so believably that people come to assume that they are that ethnicity? Yes see in the real world folks have been mixing and mingling for about 300 years and the profession is called acting, which is pretty much about inhabiting the persona of a character that is not yourself, and conveying the thoughts and emotions of that character to an audience in manner convincing enough for the audience to believe you are that character. Christopher Reeves could not actually fly. but we believed didn’t we. So just Because Johnny is Black why does his sister have to be black ? Sue has already been played by a mixed race woman in the last 2 movies, nobody wondered about her pure white brother then, why now?

    Jessica alba is FRENCH Canadian and DANISH, last I checked, them peeps are pretty damn white! it does not come down to race dumbass, it comes down to money. Michael B. Jordan will prolly kill it as johnny storm, he did great in chronicle so I have no problem he’s gonna be great in the FAN 4 reboot. problem is, I prolly will the only person in the theater watching the movie. this movie will bomb cuz a popular character was changed not for the sake of change but for the sake of being PC. look at blade for a minute, that franchise was a bomb, and was critically panned, rightfully so. look at halle berry as catwoman, same thing. both actors are awesome at their jobs, halle a academy award winner, and snipes as blade was a freaking no brainer, and yet, they couldn’t really do anything at the box office. if black people and other races were as good as you think they are, then why haven’t we seen a black batman yet??? cuz it would bomb, and companies know this, no matter who you get for the role, sometimes people just want to see what they have known all their life, you can fault them for that.

Well whether Jesus was black or not (which he was neither black nor white, he was middle eastern, that’s more of a brown color. Also brass isn’t a black color is more of a dirty gold like color.) But back to the subject at hand. A black Batman would be ignorant. Batman was always white since 1940 (sorry black folks, I’m not racist but I prefer to keep my characters the way they have always been.) Neither would I want to see a white person play John Stewart (the black Green Lantern for those of you not in the know.) And for anyone saying there should be more black super heroes. Where have you been? Black Panther, Black Lightning, John Stewart, Static Shock, Nick Fury (ultimate marvel and movies), Mr. Terrific, Firestorm (late 90s), Aqualad (Young Justice), Steel (comic book not the crappy Shaq movie). Just to name a few. Also to mention everyone throwing out the whole blacks are always portrayed as bad guys. There are actually no black villains that I can think of right off the top of my head (i’m sure there might be a few if I did some digging) but most of the most dangerous ones are all white. Joker, Twoface, Riddler, Lex Luthor, Captain Boomerang. The most psychotic folks are all white. That’s just my two cents, now proceed to tell me how racist I am.
