2013 Fall Anime Preview Part 1

With the summer season coming to a close, the fall season of anime is coming at us like a freight train. So many new shows are coming over from the land of the rising sun that we can’t put them all in one list! So let’s get into it, here are some of the simulcasts coming your way this fall:

Beyond The Boundary

“There is a girl who is the last surviving member of a ‘certain clan’ and a ‘half-youmu’ boy who shouldn’t exist…

This is their story.

One day after school, the half-youmu boy, Akihito Kanbara, meets a girl who looks as though she is about to jump off the roof at any second. Her name is Mirai Kuriyama. She is the last surviving member of a clan that has a blood curse that is unique even amongst the Under World Warriors.

An unchanging room. An unchanging lifestyle. An unchanging world.
That was how his days were supposed to be.

Yet, the moment that girl survivor met the half-youmu boy, his world changed completely.”

– Crunchyroll Summary

Not much of a summary but Beyond the Boundary is based of the light novel series of the same name and is being brought to us by none other by Kyoto Animation (KyoAni for short), the same studio behind such hit anime as Lucky Star, K-On, Haruhi Suzumiya, and the summer season’s Free! – Iwatobi Swim Club.) Boasting KyoAni’s signature visual style, an interesting premise, and some supernatural action, Beyond the Boundary looks like a series worth a watch.

Coppelion

In 2016 a nuclear metldown in Odaiba causes a catastrophe that force the government to shut down all of Tokyo and evacuate it’s citizens. 20 years later Tokyo has been all but abandoned due to high levels of radiation and the government has banned entry into the city. When a distress call is recieved from the ghost town, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force dispatched three young girls from the Dispatch 3 Special Force Coppelion. Due to genetic engineering Ibara, Aoi, & Taeko are immune to the radiation, and also have “special skills”. Thus the Copellions are sent into the Tokyo in search of survivors…if there are any.

Based off of the manga series of the same name Coppelion is being produced by Studio GoHands (who also produced the anime K which debuted last year and is currently being shown dubbed on Viz’s Neon Alley service). Based on the trailer for the show there is plenty of action and sci-fit to go around, with just the right amount of mystery and suspense.

Galilei Donna

Galilei Donna follows the three Ferrari sisters who are descendents of the astronomer, Galileo Galilei. The year is 2061 and the world is in the grips of another ice age. With a mysterious organization hunting them down and searching for the “Galilei Donna”, the three sisters must work together to fight against the organization and discover their true destinies.

– Crunchyroll Summary

An original work from A-1 Pictures (who has produced other in house works like Ano Hana & Vividred Operation, as well as adapting manga series like Blue Exorcist & Fairy Tail!) Galilei Donna looks like a pretty well animated show with plenty of intrigue, action, and explosions!  But will all this be enough to make this a hit or will it flop?

Gingitsune: Messenger Fox of the Gods

Makoto Saeki is a young girl with a pretty normal life as the daughter of a Shinto Shrine Priest and the 15 heiress of said shrine, that is until she meets a rude anthropomorphic fox spirit named Gintaro who can see into the future and just so happens to be the messenger of the god Inari.  Being the only one who can see him, Makoto decides to help Gintaro and the two help both humans and gods who come to the shrine.

Based off the manga of the same name and produced by Diomedea (who also produced Campione! which is currently licensed by Sentai Filmworks) Gingitsune is a slice of life story with a supernatural kick to it. Drenched in Japanese folklore and boasting some light hearted visuals, Gingitsune looks like an anime that enlighten your mind, as well as warm your heart.

Golden Time

Banri Tanba is a new student at private law school in Tokyo but due to an accident he lost all his memories prior to his high school graduation. At his new school’s orientation he meets Mitsuo Yanagisawa and the two become fast friends. Banri also meets Mitsuo’s childhood friend Koko Kaga, who is chasing him in order to fulfill they promise they made to marry each other when they were kids (Mitsuo joined applied to the school to escape her). With all this going on will Banri survive law school? Will he regain his memories?

Based off of the light novel series by Yuyuko Takemiya (who also created the hit Toradora!), Golden Time is being directed by Chiaki Kon (who directed the anime adaptation of Higurashi) and is being produced by J.C. Staff (producers of Revolutionary Girl Utena, Azumanga Daioh, Ikki Tousen, and both A Certain Magical Index & A Certain Scientific Railgun among others) Golden Time is certainly a show that looks like it has lot going for it. With an interesting cast and story, will it be able to live up to expectations?

Kill la Kill

Ryuko Matoi is a young girl on the search of the blade that killed her father. Arriving at Honnoji Academy, she encounters Satsuki Kiryuin the student council president who rules the school with an iron fist and uses powerful uniforms to defeat all who oppose her rule. After challenging and being defeated by Satsuki, Ryuko comes across Senketsu, a possessed school uniform which grants her special powers. With her new outfit in tow, Ryuko wages war against the student council in order to free Honnoji Academy and  learn the truth behind her father’s murder.

Directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi  and written by Kazuki Nakashima (the duo behind Gainax’s smash hit Gurren Lagann), Kill la Kill is the first anime developed by realtive newcomer Studio Trigger (which is also co-owned by Imaishi). It definitely has the same style as Gurren Lagann and that will certainly work in it’s favor as many fans of the series will be hungry for KlK. While the trailer for the show doesn’t show much besides a few location shots it certainly does create it’s atmosphere well in those 30 seconds. Will the GL be able to catch lightning in a bottle twice? Only time will tell.
