Will The Infinity Stones Play A Role In AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON?

SPOILERS AHEAD!!! If you haven’t seen Thor: The Dark World yet and don’t want to know what happens, avert your eyes.

Thor: The Dark World’s mid-credits scene was a game changer for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To refresh everyone’s memory, Volstagg and Sif visit Taneleer Tivan, a.k.a The Collector, to leave the Aether with him for protection. It’s then that we learn that not only is the Aether one of the Infinity Stones, but so is the Tesseract from The Avengers. As the two Asgardians leave, The Collector looks at the box containing the Aether saying, “One down, five to go.”

We knew that with Thanos being the big baddie of the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Infinity Stones (“Gems” in the comics) were going to eventually play a big role in future movies, but other than a brief glimpse of the Infinity Gauntlet in Thor, we didn’t know anything specific. With this new information, it’s all but certain the rest of the Stones will be revealed in future movies.

It was confirmed recently that a Stone will appear in Guardians of the Galaxy, and if one rumor is to be believed, another Stone might play a role in a movie few of us suspected. According to DailySuperhero, a Hollywood insider contacted them about how the Soul Stone will be utilized in the future.

I wanted to wait and share this info with you until after Thor 2 came out in the U.S. because it is about the newly revealed Infinity Stones. A contact of mine told me Joss Whedon may be using the Soul Stone to help create Ultron in Avengers 2.

I want to reiterate that this is just a rumor. DailySuperhero isn’t sure whether this plot twist is from the current script or a previous draft, but if this ends up being true…holy crap! This turns around our previous notions on the direction Age of Ultron is going to take. Since Hank Pym isn’t going to be in the movie, it was all but certain that Tony Stark would be Ultron’s creator, and somehow Ultron would become sentient and try to kill everybody.

If the Soul Stone is involved, this might be how Ultron gains sentience. In the comics, the Stone allows the user to control and manipulate souls, and the Stone itself has a hunger for souls. Maybe they’ll alter it for the movies so that it can create a soul as well as take one. This would add a bit of “magic” to a movie that was previously thought to have an antagonist depending only on technology.

This is one of those rumors that I really hope is true. Ultron is a cool villain and all, but if the Soul Stone ends up being used in the movie, it’s a great way to give him a connection to the cosmic side of the MCU. It could also lead the Earth heroes to discover the threat of Thanos and the rest of the Infinity Stones, giving them time to prepare for a final conflict in Avengers 3 or any future movie. Maybe Ultron ends up surviving the events of Age of Ultron and goes into the universe to find the rest of the stones or Thanos himself. The possibilities are endless!

Still, it’s just a rumor, so we’ll need to wait to hear more plot details, but damn, this could raise Age of Ultron to a new level of superhero movie greatness!
