Most of you will know Christopher McQuarrie because of his recent turn as a director. He made the well received Jack Reacher this year and will re-team with Tom Cruise on Mission: Impossible 5. Deadline now reports the screenwriter turned director is already looking ahead at his next project. Chris will write and direct a live-action adaptation of the anime series Star Blazers. A Japanese anime series (also known as Battleship Yamato) that predates franchises like Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica. In Japan, they have already attempted a live-action Battleship Yamato film which turned out to be quite successful there. Chris’ writing credits are mostly decent which includes The Usual Suspects which earned him an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Along with writing for projects such as The Wolverine (although not credited like with X2), Edge of Tomorrow, Jack Reacher, Valkyrie, and Jack The Giant Slayer. Another one of his underrated projects was The Way of The Gun which he both wrote and directed. The project is setup at Skydance Productions which is responsible for most of the big films coming out of Paramount. Films such as Terminator 5, Star Trek Into Darkness, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, World War Z and McQuarrie’s upcoming MI5. I wouldn’t be overly shocked to see Tom Cruise’s name eventually being linked to the project since the working relationship he currently has with both Paramount and Chris.

“In the futuristic Star Blazers, Earth’s atmosphere has been obliterated by a distant alien race, and the survivors have one year before radiation will reach their underground refuge and wipe out the human race. The survivors get a shot of hope in the form of alien technology that can deliver a small crew across the universe and back with the means to stave off extinction.”
