Sony Pictures Sets its Eyes on ASSASSIN’S CREED

Sony Pictures has become the greedy fat kid of Hollywood and their newest obsession seems to be video game adaptations.  Having gobbled up the rights to the PS3’s blockbuster series “Uncharted”, the studio has reset its focus on Ubisoft’s crown jewel Assassin’s Creed.  The game, which comfortably mixes the genres of historical fiction and sci-fi,  could help jumpstart a new franchise for the ailing film studio.  Ubisoft’s head honch Yves Guillemot hopes that this first film will help the video game publisher bring other successful titles to the big screen.  “Ghost Recon” and “Splinter Cell” would be the two most likely slated for a silver screen release, but given the poor quality of past video game adaptations, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

If Sony finds a stylistically gifted and competent director like Ridley Scott or Michael Mann, an excellent writing team, and a decent group of actors, I could see this movie becoming a big hit.  But I don’t really have confidence in the studio’s executives.  If their latest forays into video game adaptations indicate anything, it’s that they haven’t quite figured it out.  Even Sony’s mildly successful”Resident Evil” franchise has gone down hill, dwindling into a bumbling mess of explosions and poorly crafted 3d effects.  I love Assassin’s Creed and I’m hopeful for this new franchise…but I’m not quite convinced.
