New MATRIX TRILOGY. Maybe.

According to the latest reports, and by reports, I mean interwebs gossip, the Wachowski brothers (siblings, I should say) are working on a brand spanking new Matrix Trilogy. That’s right. The short lived cyberpunk zeitgeist from the start of this millenium is set for a resurgence. And, even though Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions left a sour taste in my mouth, I’m ready for a revisit. Hopefully the Wachowski won’t have as much influence over the project, as they totally George Lucas-ed their previous trilogy. One can dream!

Especially with the Harry Potter franchise long dead and the Terminator flicks at home at a different studio, Warner Bros. needs a non-superhero film for their future. A new Matrix seems like a good enough candidate.

I’m a bit scared to say, but a few of you kind readers may be a bit too young to remember The Matrix in theatres, so allow me to refresh your brains. Well, not me, but the super cool folks at Wikipedia.

MCDMATR EC012

The Matrix is a 1999 American–Australian science fiction action film written and directed by The Wachowski Brothers, starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano. It depicts a dystopian future in which reality as perceived by most humans is actually a simulated reality called “the Matrix”, created by sentient machines to subdue the human population, while their bodies’ heat and electrical activity are used as an energy source. Computer programmer “Neo” learns this truth and is drawn into a rebellion against the machines, which involves other people who have been freed from the “dream world”.

No word if Neo and Trinity will return. Honestly, I’d prefer an entirely non-messianic tale. Give me some good old cyberpunk. Human rebels warring against machines in the ruined surface cities. Sounds awesome to me!
