Gather around the proverbial campfire kiddos, because I’ve got one hell of a scoop to share with you.

Marvel Studios Phase 4 will lead with a New Avengers movie.  Boom.

robert downey jr tallMarvel’s been busy over the past few years, releasing its massive line of gritty Phase 2 movies, as well as establishing a deluge of new superheroes for Phase 3. They’ve confirmed Doctor Strange and Ant-Man will enter the fray, with little else known. We long thought Daredevil, Luke Cage, and the rest of Marvel’s backalley vigilantes would pop up in a proper film, but we now know they’ll star in a Netflix series about the Marvel Knights.

Well, we’ve talked to our friend at Disney, and we’ve received an update on the state of Marvel Studios. She’s told us Marvel’s Phase 4 will push the New Avengers movie. Here’s what she said:

“It’s so incredibly early in the process, but unless Robert [Downey Jr.] makes an insane deal with these guys, they’re going with New Avengers.”

You’ll remember that Robert Downey Jr. renegotiated his contract with Marvel Studios after Iron Man 3 so that he’d appear in both The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers 3, but he’s yet to commit to any more. RDJ has also stated that he’s weary of his Marvel workload. He’ll be 53 by the time Avengers 3 debuts, and as much as the silver fox loves his role as Tony Stark, he’s even admitted that he may be ‘getting too old for this shit’. Combine that with both 1) viewer fatigue and 2) RDJ’s climbing fees, and you’ve got an idea of why Marvel would want to venture into Phase 4 with new characters.

Does this “New Avengers” refer to the classic comic book arc following Avengers: Disassembled, during which Spider-Man and Wolverine joined the team? The inclusion of those two bastard children is incredibly unlikely (as both Sony and Fox own the rights, respectively), but the fundamental ideas of Avengers: Disassembled, which left Earth’s Mightiest heroes in a Diaspora until they re-assembled as the New Avengers, could easily be translated into Phase 4.

When I asked whether New Avengers referred to the comic arc or simply that there will be new people who happen to comprise The Avengers, our source said:

Well, you’ve heard the recent casting announcements. They’ve got a ton of great guys. Paul Rudd. Michael Douglas. Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Whoever they choose for Doctor Strange and the other new guys in Phase 3. They’ve got a lot of great guys to lead the new phase of the team. But that’s all I say.  It’s really early.

We’ll get more specifics as they come in, but as this move for the New Avengers movie is part of a broad strategy, I’m not sure if we’ll receive any news about the smaller specifics for a while.

            incorrect actually. listen, i love RDJ as tony stark (hell, he may be the greatest casting of any superhero ever), but the character is bigger than the actor. no matter how big a name or how talented an actor is, they are all replaceable. maybe they will retire iron man for a few years and bring RDJ back for a smaller role or a cameo in phase 4 or phase 5 movie. or maybe they’ll just recast him.

            You are right. I thought about it quite a bit, it’s completely possible to recast these characters. Look at Superman, I do like Henry Cavill, I never thought I would like someone other than Michael Keaton as Batman and Christian Bale proved me wrong there, the jury is still out on Affleck. RDJ is replaceable, he will be remembered for bringing the character to life and giving it life. They just have to be smart when casting the next Iron Man, wolverine, and any other character that will need to go on after their actors cannot.

    Unleash the Fanboy gained respect from me for being one of only a handful of sites to call Latino Review out on their bullshit, but all that respect has gone out of the window now.

    Fact is, this is one of the most speculative, bullshit stories I’ve ever read. Marvel will replace outgoing stars with new Phase Three characters in The Avengers 4! Wow, really? Who would have thought it.

    And as for your “pretty fucking spotless track record”…

    A) the fact you have an unconfirmed script review of The ExpendaBelles in no way supports you having a Disney insider

    B) your own script review of Transformers 4 debunks the authenticity of the story, as does Michael Bay. And everyone was guessing Dinobots / Unicron etc. anyway.

    C) You Jarvis / Ultron report has been debunked by the casting of James Spader

    D) Anyone could have guessed that the biggest X-Men villain not to appear in a movie would sooner or later make his debut.

    Fact is, if you have a Disney source who knows about Phase Four, come back and tell us exactly which movies Marvel are releasing in 2016 and 2017, in the order they’re planned, and maybe you’ll regain some of the credibility that you’ve just thrown out the window. Otherwise stop peddling this guesswork bullshit.

    And I think you owe Latino Review an apology, as your criticism of them, combined with this shit, makes you very, very hypocritical.

      So, they have 5 scoops in total now? And you’re discrediting them becuase “I’m an internet person, I could have totally guessed that anyway!”

      Yeah, bullshit.

      I can guess that Phase 3 will include Black Panther and a new Cosmic Movie, as theat’s a sound bet, but that’s just mindless speculation. And UTF and the rest of the geek sites do that all the time. Just read their other articles, they’re all prefaced with speculation.

      They actually speculated that Harry Osborn would be Green Goblin in TASM 2 way back last February. The article was prefaced with a “this is my speculation” too.

      So why didn’t they just make that a scoop? In hindsight, it seems like an obvious choice? Why didn’t they lie and say scoop.

      Because, like Latino-Review, they’re not going to blindly lie. Sure, LR gets a few wrong, but they were spot on with others. I don’t think UTF’s going to blindly lie here. Their guessing game is great, especially in the articles where they blatantly say ‘speculation’. So they’ve no need to give fake scoops, otherwise they’d do that for all of their speculation articles, whih have a pretty good track record

        I don’t see 5 confirmed scoops. I see 4 dubious news stories that could easily be guesswork, at least one of which has been officially debunked, and a possible script review (of which I’m not questioning the validity, but it’s certainly not confirmed).

        Why wouldn’t they blindly lie? An article gets no traffic if it’s a blog writer speculating. An article gets a tonne of traffic if it’s a “scoop”, meaing ad impressions, links and authority.

        Like I said in my original comment, I had respect for UTF, but that’s gone now with this story. But hey, in 6 or 7 years time when Marvel changes up the Avengers roster – like they’re obviously going to – you can tell me I was wrong.

        Here’s a scoop from me – Marvel will be adding another character to the line-up in The Avengers 3. That’s straight from my source at Disney, who serves burgers at Disneyland and can see it a fucking mile off like everyone else.

      I’m seeing a lot of semi-rude comments coming your way, so I want to clear it up.

      1) Yes, we criticized LR for their scoops. They had made some inane promises that never panned out. It seemed to be mindless guess work, so we called bullshit on it. Especially since they marketed it so crassly.

      BUT… we did publicly apologize to them following their Batman Vs Superman news. They called it. No one else had any idea.

      2) We don’t post scoops often. We get quite a few every week, but unless it’s something from a trusted source, we can’t post it!

      3) Latino-Review gets some really awesome scoops, like the Bradley Cooper casting news, because they have better sources than us. What more can I say? They know agents who represent these people going out for roles in Marvel movies, we don’t. Our sources for Fox and Disney are employees from the uncreative side. That’s why whenever we have trusted scoops for you, they’re broader in scope, because we just don’t have access to the top guys yet.

      But we’re working on it. That’s part of running the site. Building relationships with folks and trying to find news before anyone else.

      4) Yeah, this particular scoops is broad. And I’m sure you coulda “guessed it”, but we actually have a Disney source verifying that this is an ongoing discussion at the Studio. That’s the topic of this article.

      If you want me to name off the casting choices for Black Panther and the new Doctor Strange movie, I’m sorry. I can’t do that. I’m working hard to get some good news for you, but I don’t have trusted sources that are that high in the organization.

      5) As for our other scoops being debunked… no. Go back, read the specific scoops. Michael Bay came out last year and slammed us for that early draft, and now we know a good deal of it was true.
      None have been debunked and 3/4 are confirmed.

    If true, this would be rather interesting. I mean in the comics Avengers had a revolving membership and why not keep things fresh creatively by shaking up the line-up?
    I mean for example it’s been debunked already, but imagine if Johnny Depp was to be Dr. Strange. Imagine him in this hypothetical picture acting in a scene with Michael Douglas. Magic vs Science. Wouldn’t that be fun to watch?
    Plus Scott Lang, he would basically (I assume of course) be the only regular guy per say in the team. No superpowers, only “super” because of a costume that he stole from the dude who actually designed it. Nevermind an ex-convict/divorced single dad at that too.

    Just recast Iron Man. The role is bigger than one man. Iron Man debuted in 1963, two years before RDJ was even born. The character is older than he is. He’s great in the role, but they DON’T need him. It’s very recastable.
