Watch Out NAZIs! First Look At MARVEL’s Newest Short Film: AGENT CARTER

I love Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter, but gawd damn, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER was one hell of a mess. I absolutely adored the first half: a sentimental homage to patriotism of old, personified in the weak but earnest form of Steve Rogers. BUT, the second half. Oh lawdy, the second half! It was a crass, and almost insulting portrayal of World War II.

After witnessing that short Afghanistan ambush sequence in Jon Favreau’s original Iron Man flick, I expected a far richer, darker exploration of combat in Cap’s origin story, but I left theatres insanely disappointed. Why would they reduce Captain America’s heroics to a campy, inauthentic laser gun show? I wasn’t expecting Saving Private Ryan, but the horror of war is one of the most contextually important aspects of Cap’s story, and that was completely lost in the film.

That aside… Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter’s relationship was an incredibly delightful love story. Compared to the complex romances of other big screen heroes, these two created a refreshing (albeit simple) romantic tale.

With The First Avenger sequel CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER on its way, I never expected to see Agent Carter in her young, NAZI killing form again, but the good folks at Marvel have decided to create a short film based on the WW II character. Here’s a first look at it:
