Fassbender Going Multi-Racial for ASSASSIN’S CREED Movie?

While actor Michael Fassbender is out promoting his most recent film 12 Years a Slave (which has a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), he is also taking the opportunity to update fans on the film adaptation of the Assassin’s Creed video game. While speaking to The Daily Beast, Fassbender had this to say:

Michael FassbenderThat’s definitely happening. We’re just developing the script at the moment. I’d heard of it but had never played the game. I don’t have a video game reader … that’s not what they’re called. [Laughs] I met up with the guys from Ubisoft and they told me the story behind it, and I thought it was very interesting—the idea of reliving memories.”

What did he mean by that? Does that mean Fassbender will not only play protagonist Desmond Miles but his ancestor Altair? Or Ezio Auditore and Connor for future films? While the idea does sound interesting, it could be a bit of a challenge considering that Altair is Syrian, Ezio is Italian and Connor is half-Native American. I don’t doubt Fassbender’s acting ability to portray these quasi-historical figures, and men portraying other races of people has been done before in Hollywood (see Robert Downy Jr. in Tropic Thunder). We’ll just have to wait for more details. The game series hasn’t let us down yet, and since Ubisoft (the game’s production company) is heavily involved, I don’t expect the movie to do so. The adaptation of the celebrated series will start filming next year and plans to be released on June 19, 2015.
