Welcome to the first in a new editorial series here at UTF, Casting Call, where we pick actors and demand they be cast in roles we like. To start off I’d like to talk about a casting choice that I think would be absolutely fantastic, and I have a bit of proof to go along with it. Who is the actor I’m talking about? Obi-Wan himself, Ewan McGregor.
McGregor and Hank Pym look the same. There are more reasons than that though. He’s a great actor, and I know he can play the psychotic nature of Pym quite well, along with the calm and mild-mannered side (the one that isn’t creating murderous robots and hitting his wife). Ol’ Ant-Man is quite a mixed bag. He’s a heroic icon, but within that same identity, he’s a bit of a cur. His powers are silly, seemingly useless in battle, but that’s also what makes him so interesting in the Marvel verse. He’ll have to struggle with his own demons while also striving to be relevant in the context of Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, Thor, and Cap. Ewan Mcregor in that cyclone of psychosis would be nothing short of amazing.
ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?
Bradley Cooper was my only other consideration. The Ultimates iteration of the character is very different from the 616 one, and Pym in the former is kinda like Stark, which would make for good chemistry between Bruce Banner, Tony Stark and Hank Pym. I personally hope they don’t go that route as I don’t want him to be a carbon copy of Stark. Cooper has shown he can do well in dramatic roles with Limitless, so if they decided to go for a mix then Bradley Cooper would be right up there with McGregor as my top choice(s). However, I’m certain he’ll be a very dark character which is why I think Ewan McGregor is a better choice.
WANT SOME PROOF?
Sure thing. Famous internet fan-art guy SkinnyGlasses made an image of McGregor as Pym a few months back, facing his latest creation: Ultron. See it below:
Stay tuned to UTF every week for more instalments in Casting Call, and discuss who you think should portray Hank Pym/Ant-Man in the comments!
