TEEN TITANS GO! “Staff Meeting” Review

Who knew that Robin had such a cool bo-staff? Spoilers!

Why is Robin (Scott Menville) so cool in this show? Raven (Tara Strong) is still my personal favorite character, but most people prefer Robin, and I can completely see why. He is consistently the funniest character on the show, and his episodes are usually the best. Part of the reason might be Menville’s humorous voice acting.

Anyway, in “Staff Meeting”, the team is dismayed to learn that Robin views his bo-staff as more of a friend then his own partners, and that he even talks to it (the voices in his head are back!). After some mishaps, the Titans accidentally break the staff. Robin is greatly depressed, but Raven has the solution: go find the mystical Universe Tree (Khary Payton) and ask him to build a new staff, and even better one!

So Robin makes the journey….and then cool things happen. Honestly, this is the best episode in a long time, being packed-full of jokes and gags (when Robin is depressed, he begins eating ice-cream with Mr. Freeze’s face on the box) and the witty dialogue only ever stops to show the amusing reactions (look at the character’s faces when Cyborg gets stabbed in the head).

The ending might be the funniest part though. When the Universe Tree gives Generic Speech 101, Robin cuts him off and uses a buzz saw on him (“Timber”). Out-of-character, yes. Funny, affirmative.

The one scene that lowers the score a bit is a very unnecessary snot joke. You will know it when you see it.

Otherwise, an almost flaw-less episode. At this point, Titans Go! is probably funnier than Marvel’s comedies (those do count, right?).

Final thoughts: Why does Beast Boy have a Batman-shaped Piñata? And those Mushroom Men reminded me of Toad for some reason…
