BEWARE THE BATMAN “Toxic” Review

It seems that today’s episode of Beware the Batman will be the final one for at least a few weeks, unfortunately. Was it a good send-off? Spoilers below.

In “Toxic“, a security guard named Rex Mason (Adam Baldwin) is transformed into a strange monster by his boss, Simon Stagg (Jeff Bennett), who was angered due to the fact that his daughter, Sapphire Stagg (Emmanuelle Chriqui), was dating Rex Mason. Now Batman (Anthony Ruivivar) must stop and cure Metamorpho.

Some of you DC veterans may have noticed that the plot summary is very similar to the two-part “Metamorphosis” episode of Justice League. If you have watched that episode, I would also highly recommend that you watch “Toxic“, if not just to compare how both shows handle the set-up, because trust me, they’re not the same.

I like Metamorpho. Unlike some other DC characters, he is more than just a tragic backstory. He is an actually likeable character. I wish I could say the same about Sapphire. I liked her in the Justice League version….but not here. She came across as shallow. Simon Stagg, meanwhile, is a pig. He is the kind of villain I hate most. His reasons for doing these things are petty and plain sad.

Love or hate the CGI animation, it works wonders for showing off Metamorpho’s powers, whether it involves transmutation or flight. I would even say that he looks a tad bit more impressive than in Justice League! And Baldwin does a commendable job.

So close…and yet so far away…

I missed Tatsu, but I’m sure she’ll get plenty of screen-time later. Anyway, Beware the Batman continues remind us that some comic-based cartoons can take themselves seriously, with emotional, engaging stories, and actually well-made action scenes. Marvel, watch and learn.
