Wonder Woman #22 Review

Our heroes have escaped the grasp of the First Born only to end up on New Genesis, but the question remains: are they safe?  Read on to find out.

The official description from DC:

Welcome to New Genesis!

Wonder Woman makes her first visit to Orion’s homeworld and comes face to face with the Highfather…and sees the strange hold he has over his uncontrollable son!

From the first issue on this title has been one that has encapsulated the very best of the New 52, as the creative team has seen fit to spin a yarn that not only grows with each outing but feels organic in its implementation.  For so long it steered clear of the greater universe around it, as a rouges gallery grew to the point that when we welcomed Orion and his people it felt like a natural extension rather than an unnecessary invasion.

Much of the credit for that goes to scribe Brian Azzarello, who has proven his worth to this franchise.  I’ll freely admit that I had passing interest in the character prior to the relaunch but afterward I can’t help but sing its praises to anyone who will listen.  This latest issue revolves around a script that has but one sequence that feels somewhat forced near the climax, as the expert dialogue breaks down for a few panels but overall though this is another exceptional entry.

The art by Cliff Chiang is just as stylized and relevant as it has been since the series’ inaugural adventure.  His bold pencil strokes evoke a minimalist style that has a hint of historical reverence that compliments this drama full of Gods and Goddesses.  I was particularly impressed with his interpretation of New Genesis and its inhabitants as he really nailed a paradise landscape that should make any of us envious.

Wonder Woman #22 is another great comic book that’s sure to please its devoted followers.  And if you’re looking to get involved with the series buy the graphic novels, a couple back issues and catch up to this wild ride because you won’t regret the investment.  Highly recommended.
