Witchblade #157 Review

Sara Pezzini stumbles on another odd job, but is it worth your time?  Read on.

The official description from Image:

“PORTALS,” Part One

Even as she struggles to make ends meet as a PI, Sara Pezzini can’t help but be drawn into the corrupt supernatural underbelly of Chicago. Her discovery of mystical portals around the city will lead her to a realm unlike anything she’s experienced before and bring her face-to-face with a former bearer of the Witchblade!

While walking down the streets of Chicago, Sara Pezzini and the Witchblade inadvetantly stumble upon a kidnapping by two ogres.  Yep, you read that right, two ogres.  They happen to be taking a man through a portal into the lands of the Faerie.  So what’s a Witchblade bearer to do?  Well if your Sara Pezzini, follow them into the thick of it.

Tim Seeley earns extra points this issue for offering readers a goofy but competent narrative that intricately weaves a massive but stereotypical fantasy world with the history of the Witchblade.  The script this issue not only successfully nails the balance between inner and outer dialoge but also brings back one of my favorite ex-wielders in the process.  It’s a fun little story that will keep fans engaged from start to finish.

Diego Bernard continues to impress with his art.  I can only imagaine the talks that he had with Tim Seeley when he got this crazy script.  He more or less nailed the look of a brand new realm, though It’s not perfect.  Many of the elements look like they are borrowed from familiar fantasy stories and I do wish there had been a bit more creativity on his part.  But that being said his interpretation of this world more than works.

Overall this was a good issue.  It successfully dove head first into a fantasy narrative while maintaining the core elements that tend to comprise a Witchblade story.  This team continues to impress with another recommended issue.
