Warlord of Mars: Dejah Thoris #32 Review

Warlord of Mars-Dejah Thoris Banner

Does the final act of this temporal yarn close out on a high note?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Trapped in the future of Barsoom, Dejah Thoris and her descendant battle invading humans in a dark tomorrow. As she struggles to find her way back to her own time, Dejah is confronted with decisions that could change her destiny and alter the history of the red planet!?

Warlord of Mars-Dejah Thoris 32_CThere’s a lot to enjoy here but after the initially interesting foundations there are some stumbles that lead to mediocrity.  That said, the creative team works within the confined space of their own making yielding some mixed results.  Both the author and illustrator bring a lot of worthwhile nuggets to the whole adventure that are sure to garner attention but not praise.

As stories go this one by Robert Place Napton has, on face value a lot of appealing features. From the first page to the final panel, the scribe crafts an interesting picture of the future that implements enough horrifying occurrences to keep fans engaged.  Our heroine is in believable danger throughout but it’s the meat of the yarn that comes into question.  The dialogue is overly wordy and the ultimate summation of the piece doesn’t excel as far as it honestly needs to.  In other words, the final moments and a few prior sequences fell into predictable and unimaginative pitfalls.

Carlos Rafael handles the art, and once again he delivers a beautiful array of renditions that are sure to please.  That’s not to say that I completely agree with all the panels, but for the majority of the visuals this talent easily excels as he offers depth and action as the text requires.  The flaws of his work come from a few instances where the expressions of some of the female characters looked more than a bit off.

Warlord of Mars: Dejah Thoris #32 does what it needs to do.  There’s quality here as both sides of this comic come together to entertain but not inspire.  For that reason is squeaks by with a very light recommendation.
