The Victories #8 Review

Michael Avon Oeming’s The Victories #8 continues the “Posthuman” arc that has been very well received through its first 2 issues. Does the third issue live up to those which proceeded it?

The official description from Dark Horse:

The Advisors succeed in combining Champion DNA to turn themselves into the powerful Posthumans in an effort to dominate the world. Heroes and villains may stand in their way, but nothing will stop the Posthumans from taking their “rightful” place ruling the planet until the return of the Visitors. Featuring an exclusive backup story illustrated by Mike Hawthrone (Deadpool).

the victories 8 review coverOeming continues to write and illustrate the series and is equal parts awesome. It certainly seems to be a bonus for the reader that Oeming gets to bring his own creations to life both visually and through the written word. This issue is split into two parts and each part ends leaving us wanting more and with the thought that things are going to get much worse for the planet and our heroes. Without spoiling any of the action within the issue, it certainly seems that the bad guys are positioned right where they want to be when we turn the final page.

The connections Oeming is building to Biblical mythology and the alien master race responsible for the superpowered beings among us is brilliantly done and here we get some valuable background on it which certainly fills in some very important gaps while setting us up for what’s likely to fall into place in the next issue. Oeming’s artwork is solid throughout and he treats Metatron as if he’s his own child (and he is just that). The books penultimate page which draws us into Metatron’s torturous memory of his own origins is one of the most imaginative pieces of artwork I’ve seen in a comic in 2013.

Arguably leaving the reader in the PERFECT spot for a 3rd issue out of a 5 issue arc, The Victories #8 is another example of why Oeming’s work is always worth a look. His take on the creation of supers is as good of a mix of mythology and sci-fi as you’ll get.
