Vampirella #28 Review

The weird team-up of a vile mother and her heroic daughter continues here, but is the dynamic spark disappearing from this arc?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

“Theories of Relativity” (Part 2 of 2): Vampirella’s mother Lilith claims she’s not the same evil manipulator she used to be, and she’s willing to go to great lengths…er, depths…to prove it! Also in this issue: The origin stories of Criswell and The Conjuress are concluded!

We’ve all got some family issues to sort through on some level right?  So from that basic recognition the situation Vampirella now finds herself stuck with is somewhat empathetic by nature even if it is rather outlandish in context.  But don’t worry the creative team sorts it all out with an engrossing trip to Hell… literally.

The script by series scribe Brandon Jerwa delivers a competent outing that offers not only action but some minor development for our chief protagonist. He quite handily pens her journey by allowing everyone’s favorite scarlet clad heroine to ware her emotions on surface level, as some serious roadblocks and deep questions bubble to the surface.  I was instantly engaged when the journey into the “beautiful” landscape of Hell brought a mother and daughter, whom were separated by their own dysfunctional history, set them in a simplistic scene that sold their newly formed union.

Hubert Khan Michael continues his run on the title by delivering yet another well formed but slightly chaotic set of visualizations for this monstrous franchise.  As always his pencil work carries a minimal amount of detail but just enough character work to make you forget about any minor hiccups.  Truth be told from start to finish there were only a few pages where the panels therein seemed rather rushed as the overall job on display did more than enough to support the narrative.

Vampirella #28 is an eventful release that does plenty things right for this story. Beyond that the creative team ends this issue on just the right note as eager fanboys and fangirls have to deal with the wait for the next release.  Recommended.
