Vampirella #21 Review

Is this latest outing a worthwhile followup to Vampirella #20?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

After the startling events of last issue, Vampirella’s ready to put everything on the line in an attempt to save one soul and destroy another. Heroes and villains alike are playing toward their own endgame, and the cards are turning with a deadly quickness. We’re not kidding when we say that BIG changes are coming, and it all starts here with Part 1 of INQUISITION!

After last month’s issue, I’ll admit I was very impressed.  It’s not that I honestly thought low of Vampirella as a property but I was shocked by how much I enjoyed that issue.  Every page, every interaction just clicked with me in a way that I didn’t know was possible.  Thankfully the talented people behind this latest jaunt continue to work their magic, as the next story arc kicks off.

Brandon Jerwa delivers another excellent script that shows off the strengths of his writing prowess.  Keeping the tongue-in-cheek dialogue to a minimum, he succeeds in taking the established premise from the previous issue and turning what was an in-depth story into an all encompassing chase.  The narrative pace and intoxicating story threads, bring about another strong romp that continues to push and evolve this protagonist while setting up revelations that will surely affect her for some time to come.

Heubert Khan Michael does an excellent job on the art, as each curve and straight line is accompanied by strong sensibilities that yield a truly flesh and blood world.  This latest issue is blessed with some very dynamic work that falters only slightly when it comes to some panels near the end.  But from the scantily clad heroine soaring in the sky to the men that hunt her ferociously, each character looks just as they should.

Vampirella #21, is a fun read that shows off the skill and power of both the creative team behind it and the storied character starring in it.  Recommended.
