Transformers Spotlight: Hoist Review

He’s (it?) is not the most well known character, but that’s where the Transformers Spotlight series has thrived in the past. So, with Transformers Spotlight: Hoist, does this issue offer anything good?

First up, the official description from IDW:

FACE OFF! HOIST has always managed to fade into the background: until now. Trapped on an alien planet with a narcissist, half a scientist and a creature that may or may not turn into a catapult, the Lost Light’s mild-mannered maintenance engineer must confront the five most dangerous DECEPTICONS ever.

As far as the story goes, this is another obvious/predictable affair. With a bunch of stranded autobots, there are a few plot elements and scenes which don’t really come as a surprise. Then again, these spotlight issues aren’t always about the plot. Where they excel is in their attention to character.

This is where the writing comes in. Whilst its not the best, James Roberts offers a distinct atmosphere that separates this from other issues. At the center of this is a great sense of character, whilst being trapped together, the writing and dialogue (especially that involving Hoist) manage to capture a sense of loneliness and isolation. Previous Spotlight issues focused on the group, and how the individual wanted to be accepted. Hoist is the opposite, a quiet character on the fringe of the group, who contributes in his own ways. In this aspect, Roberts does a great job of capturing Hoist, even if he isn’t the most interesting character because of it.

As for the art, Agustin Padilla offers plenty of detail, with full width art and plenty of big, detailed panels. This is brought to life through Joanna Lafuente’s vibrant art style, giving extra definition and appeal to every panel. The art is a high quality example of what Transformers can offer, and makes up for anything that may be lacking in action during the more tense moments.

All in all, this is another impressive entry into the Transformers Spotlight series. Sure, its not the best, but then a lot is down to your preference in characters. Whether your a fan of this one, or want a quick read by itself, Transformers Spotlight: Hoist is none the less worth picking up.
