Transformers: Robots In Disguise #28

Transformers_robots_disguise_28 variant coverSo, remember how good Transformers: Robots In Disguise was? Well, even though Dark Cybertron is over, Transformers: Robots In Disguise #28 is really a completely different title under the same name. Confused? Let me explain…

The official description from IDW:

EARTHFALL! The AUTOBOTS return to Earth—with OPTIMUS PRIME in command! But what brought them back—and what terrifying secret do the humans hold? A bold new era begins here!

Where as the old issues were focused on post-war Cybertron, this issue brings the action to Earth and see’s a shake-up in the cast. While it opens up to an exciting and explosive issue, Robots In Disguise #28 barely answers anything in between itself and Dark Cybertron. All we get here is some reference to a trial and a 6 month time frame that seems to magically solve everything.

That aside, John Barber knows how to write. Lack of knowledge aside, Barber jumps straight into the action and quickly establishes the kind of tone we can expect from here on out. He also eases into the new line-up, including Optimus Prime, who hasn’t exactly been in the lime-light recently. All in all, it wraps up to an explosive issue that knows how to make an entrance.

On the other hand, this issue looks as strong as ever. Andrew Griffith has an eye for detail, especially when it comes to the intricate, mechanical nature of the Transformers. Combined with the varied, vibrant colors of Josh Perez and Joana Lafuente, the visual style adds a strong impact from the moment you turn each page.

All in all, I’m not sure how well this title will be in the future but I have hope. While it’s a big change, Transformers: Robots In Disguise #28 nonetheless keeps to the core issues of robots and action.
