Todd, The Ugliest Kid on Earth #4 Review

Todd, the Ugliest Kid on Earth’s first story arc wraps-up in issue #4 with all the fun, comedy, action and mystery we have come to enjoy from this off-beat series. What is Todd’s ultimate fate and will we see more from the ugliest kid on earth?

Official description from Image:

“CANDY WITH STRANGERS,’ Conclusion. When his best friend and mentor gets thrown in solitary confinement, Todd becomes an easy target for an Aryan Nation assassin. Meanwhile, his father accepts a marriage proposal that was never given, and his mom comes face-to-face with the Maniac Killer.

Since it’s debut back in January this black comedy series from M.K. Perker and Ken Kristensen has been as off-kilter and fun for anyone looking for something fresh in comics. Issue four concludes the first arc with tongue firmly planted in cheek as Todd finds his way out of prison where he was placed since issue #2. Todd’s mom Peggy finds a way to redeem herself after the mistake she made and shows that she actually does care. Todd’s dad spends the issue getting to know actress Belinda Fairchild and what she has to offer. He responds with typical selfishness but like Peggy uses it to his family’s benefit.

What has been brilliant about this series is the cast of characters that surround Todd and his oblivious approach to a serial killer, his parents, bullies and talking cock roaches. Yes, talking cock roaches. What Kristensen manages to achieve by surrounding Todd with a terribly flawed family is to find some real heart for such a self-serving and damaged characters. In the end you can’t help rooting for them and Todd even more.

The art by Perker compliments the humor and horror perfectly. The exaggerations and comic flare add so much that’s it’s as fun to look at as it is to read. The bad news is that Todd, The Ugliest Kid on Earth has concluded. The good news is they’ll be back in September as an ongoing series. If you are a fan of dark humor, horror and just plain great story-telling get this book!
