The Legend of Luther Strode #5 Review

The summer of big budget popcorn action movies is here and The Legend of Luther Strode has all the appeal, action and excitement of them all in a comic book.

Official description from IMAGE:

Luther has been Bound. Petra has become Jack’s new friend. Binder gets a surprise from an unexpected source. And the world burns down around them all.

The Legend of Luther Strode is high octane entertainment and I just can’t enough of it. Last issue Luther was “bound” and Jack was on the attack after Petra. One thing I love about a series like this and the approach writer Justin Jordan takes is to go at the reader full force. No recap, no internal monologues, just action and mayhem. The old saying is still true, “every comic is someone’s first comic,” and I can live with that and what comes with it. But as a die hard fan it’s refreshing for a writer to serve the long time reader with a non-stop flow from issue to issue.

The opening fight between Jack and Petra is a blast, literally, and it is a pure adrenaline high. Petra is a no-holds-barred bad ass in the face of such losing odds and Jordan gives her a confidence and tenacity you’d hope most heroes to possess. Binder’s fight takes to the limit the punishment someone like him and Strode can handle and in the end the results are as gruesome as they are satisfying. Jordan’s writes this with a lot of grit but by the end of this issue it’s understood he’s got heart as well. Tradd Moore’s art is unique. His lines are hard and crisp and the characters actions are cartoony in their exaggeration but it makes for compelling movement and pace. Not to be lost is the detailed line work with which Moore gives it richness and depth.

The Legend of Luther Strode is oft overlooked but should be given pause and consideration. This is book is a non-stop action ride with enough heart and toughness to rival anything else on the shelves. Pick it up and enjoy the ride.
