The Black Bat #6 Review

It’s time for some revelations, decisions and heartbreak!  But should you really care what happens next?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Detective Brody is on the move with the suitcase bomb. Will he plant it in the courthouse before The Black Bat finds him? The clock is ticking and all hope rests on the Black Bat’s shoulders!

The dark world of this disfigured attorney continues to deepen with each passing page.  You have to hand it to the creative team, after just six issues they’ve crafted a compelling yarn that has every reason to draw you in.  And despite some minor off moments here and there I can honestly say that this is one comic that’s worth the price of admission.

The script capitalize on the hard-work of its author, as our protagonist comes face to face with a horror few will see coming.  To his credit, Brian Buccellato succeeds in crafting something compelling.  He easily kept me glued to my chair in eager anticipation, but the shinning moment came at the cliffhanger.  The road in felt a little bit too straightforward, as some dialogue came off corny.  I recognize that these parts had to happen to build up the meat of the tale but I can’t help but feel slightly underwhelmed by them, but that said, what an ending!

Ronan Cliquet hands in his best work to date, as intricate line work gives way to a controlled vision that befits this violent tale.  In any other hands many aspects of his style might seem out of place, but trust me he uses correct pencil strokes and angles to create something that’s not believable but entirely worthwhile.  It exists as a proper archetype to the brutal actions of an anti-hero and I was floored by the talent’s minimalist tendencies.  Through that execution he allowed more than enough room for some startling visuals.

The Black Bat #6 is absolutely thrilling.  From the first page to the final panel we have an adventure that, in the most positive light, highlights the strengths of this dynamic creative team.  Recommended.
