Superman Unchained #5 Review

Superman Uncahined 2014 Banner

Can this tale of intrigue catch the attention of modern comic fans?  Read on to find out.

The official description from DC:

Superman and Wraith form an alliance to rescue a hostage and strike at the heart of Ascension, but the mission goes awry when it becomes clear the Man of Tomorrow and the soldier from beyond the stars have very different methodologies—and objectives! Plus, secrets are revealed about Wraith’s people!

Superman Unchained 5_CIt’s hard not to open the book and instantly geek out because of the creative forces behind it.  Between the written word and the visuals there’s a lot to love, but perhaps the most important thing is the set up at the conclusion.

The title of the franchise starts to make sense as series scribe Scott Snyder shows us several elements that will get people talking.  There’s a specific moment from Clark’s youth that acts as an almost lens text to the growing threats around him in the present.  And it’s from that perspective that we begin to see what’s been steadily building since the fist inaugural issue.  These are trials, that’s simply true, and their existence is meant to push our big blue boy scout to the limits of his character, both physically and mentally.  There are some off moments but for the most part the writer has such a command of the material that these hiccups are forgiven.

When it comes to the art followers are treated to two distinct styles.  First up is industry legend, Jim Lee, who uses his highly detailed and extremely muscular renditions to form the perils surrounding the Man of Steel.  I’ve met people that have complained about his quirky visuals, but for me it’s a treat to just marvel at the shear amount of depth and versatility he brings to each panel.  When it comes to the flashbacks another accomplished talent steps in, as Dustin Nguyen enchants with a somewhat chaotic set of illustrations that highlight the angst of our hero’s youth.

Superman Unchained #5 is really good comic book, that had quite a few powerful scenarios and a dynamic cliffhanger.  Recommended.
