Super Dinosaur #16 Review

Super Dinosaur…in space! C’mon, you know you were thinking that while looking at the cover. The 16th installment of this series is the perfect test. After the great Inner-Earth story with the fantastic Exile character, how would the book move forward without the alien and his interesting story? The answer is that it just does. What we have here is one of the best issues yet of the series, also not a bad jumping on point for a new reader.

Here’s the official description from Image:

Why are Super Dinosaur and Derek Dynamo on the moon? Why not?! There’s a dark secret deep below the surface that could spell doom for our heroes… what is “Inner-Moon?”

It starts out in the forest, with Derek and SD camping. After such hardships from the last few issues, it’s an appropriate scene, even nice for the reader to witness these two best friends talk to each other without a dangerous thing happening in the background. But, don’t think this is a breather issue, it jumps straight into the action when Derek’s dad contacts him for a mission. What is that mission? Find out the trouble on Inner-Moon. First off, the space backdrop is a refreshing change of pace after being stuck underneath the earth for the past few issues. Robert Kirkman is ahead of his game in this issue, pretty strong writing throughout, one of the stronger Super Dinosaur issues writing wise. (My favorite line is when Derek asks whether or not earthquakes happen on the Moon, then SD replies “Wouldn’t that be moonquakes?“) Maximus comes as rather generic. He just comes off as a cheesy villain that’s evil for no real reason. The exciting parts takes place within Inner Moon, a clash of the Kalishi. These two aliens live together, but don’t apparently like each other too much. The writing is a little generic with them, but still not bad. Derek on the other hand I’ve gained respect for as a character, you’ll see his detective work later in the issue.

The art is pretty good. Sometimes the faces on some of the humans lack detail, but it’s pretty solid all around. The cover is a pretty cool one, showcasing the two main characters in space about to land on the moon with the Earth in the background.

Overall, a very good issue of Super Dinosaur, a great start to the new arc. With a bit of a mystery angle, I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next. This book is one of the best all-ages titles on the stands right now, definitely recommended.
