STAR WARS Comics Return to MARVEL in 2015!

52c6f2bf03b99Star Wars is back home. Today, Marvel Comics announced that in 2015, they will begin publishing Star Wars comic, replacing Dark Horse Comics, who had been the main Star Wars publisher since 1991 after replacing Marvel Comics. In a way, Star Wars has come full circle.

The news isn’t really surprising, though, since Disney, who now owns Marvel Comics, recently bought Star Wars, so it makes sense that Disney would want all their comics under one roof.

The deal begins sometime in 2015, so fans of the Dark Horse comics still have a year left to read their comics before they possibly go out of print (although Marvel Comics will no doubt re-release them all eventually).

For some fans, the news isn’t all good. As Dark Horse had been in charge of the comics for over 20 years, many people have gotten used to their adaptions, and indeed, may fans argue that all the best Star Wars comics have been the ones released under Dark Horse, and not Marvel.

Carol Roeder, director of Lucasfilm franchise publishing, had this to say to Dark Horse:

Dark Horse Comics published exceptional Star Wars comics for over 20 years, and we will always be grateful for their enormous contributions to the mythos, and the terrific partnership that we had.

Meanwhile, only a few months ago, Dark Horse launched a new Star Wars series, The Star Wars, that was a remake of the original trilogy. The new series, which has been critically acclaimed, was also a best seller, and I think many fans will miss the series.

I remain positive, though, that Marvel will continue the quality comics that Dark Horse started, and that Star Wars comics will continue for many, many years to come. And just in time for Episode VII, too!
