Spawn #232 Review

What happens when your costume turns on you, as it slowly starts to wrestle away your innate control?  Should you care?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

As the world eagerly awaits the gifts of their newest savior, Jim Downing’s struggle for control over the darkness within him threatens to jeopardize everything he has worked to build. Violence erupts in the deserts of Mexico as the K7 goes on a feeding frenzy, and for the first time Jim awakens to the realities of the monster that lives within him. Can a man live with so much blood on his hands, or will the weight of the world’s sins crush any hope of salvation?  While Jim wrestles with his new reality, an old adversary explores the true power behind Jim’s”miracles,” as THE CURSE makes his deadly return!

Celebrity certainly has its share of crosses to bare, but I don’t think one of them is the idea of contending with several people that are vying for you in order to gain control over this universe.  It might sound sarcastic but in regards to this brooding narrative… that’s exactly what’s going on.

Todd McFarlane pens the script and the scribe has a ball with the sequences at hand, especially a particular interrogation exchange that was simply uplifting.  From the first page to the final panel I found myself in sync with the tale as I was instantly absorbed by the subtle occurrences therein.  There were some missteps along the way, specifically I found the pacing to be a bit too slow after the readers were bombarded with a mass amount of text.

The art by Szymon Kudranski not only exemplifies the finer attributes from this property but it also highlights how essential it is for any pairing to be able to trust each other.  And that’s exactly what this issue represents as the talent uses his pencil work to give life to plot twists and inevitable turns.  In short: this comic book never looked better.

Spawn #232 is great and you should go out and pick it up.  Highly recommended.
