Shahrazad #0 Review

Is this tale really one that needs to shared with the masses?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Big Dog Ink:

A new heroine rises from the legends of the ancient world. Shahrazad was known for her amazing stories of the 1,001 Arabian Nights, but now it is time to tell her story! She lives a life unlike anything you could imagine; an existence that spans generations as well as genres. J. Scott Campbell lends a creative hand for this origin story that gives you but a taste of what is to come when Shahrazad returns for an ongoing series this fall!

In what could be dismissed as an exploitative piece of eye candy, this comic from the first page to final panel spins a yarn that’s beyond expectation.  The creative team weaves a complex yet simple odyssey that does exactly what a prologue should within the space that it is given.

Tom Hutchison pens the script and the scribe does a good job giving voice to an ageless beauty that has seen so much in her almost immortal life.  We get a first person perspective that jumps around several points in time to yield a taste of the up and coming narrative.  When dealing within this character’s journey there should be a lot more going on but not much happens here except for the underlying teases.  In the end though, like the flow of natural forces, I was captivated enough to garner my attention.

The art by Mike Krome is absolutely outstanding as the illustrator brings serene life to the written word.  The overall sense established right of the bat, is one that encapsulates a light touch which easily brings form to the affair.  There were however a couple moments where some underlying skeletal structures seemed a bit off causing some light inconsistencies that slightly tarnished an otherwise expertly crafted body of work.

Shahrazad #0 is the beginning of something special.  It’s easy to tell, even in these rather early stages and I’m very excited to cover what this team has in store for their devoted followers.  Recommended.
