THE SAVIORS #1 Review

The Saviors Banner

Is there enough here to warrant the attention of the average buyer?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

Eisner Award winner JAMES ROBINSON (Starman, Earth 2) and artist extraordinaire J. BONE (The Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror, The Spirit) present an all-new saga of monstrous alien horror.

When Tomas Ramirez stumbles upon an extraterrestrial conspiracy to take over the world, his life is changed forever. He must now seek out those few souls who share this terrible knowledge. But even united, how can they hope to defeat a shadowy alien cabal that is both indestructible and eager to kill anyone who threatens it?

The Saviors 1_CLet me start off by saying this is a weird release.  The core mechanics found are functional and digestible but the premise is out there.  To the creative team’s credit they make it all work, even when we reach a point where it seems like it’s going one way but then immediately follows another engaging track.

James Robinson pens the script and the author does an outstanding job introducing us to a tiny town complete with its own resident slacker.  Meet Tomas Ramirez, he’s a good guy but he’s high all the time. And his comfortable atmosphere is turning bizarre, as events involving lizards threaten his life.  The bulk of the text focuses in on developing our main character, but the secondary and tertiary players all feel basic.  Truth be told that flaw makes the greater tale work, because having a well-built protagonist simply gets us rooting for him when the considerable danger starts.

The art by J. Bone fits the words on the page perfectly.  His jagged edges and quirky design sense meld a small town mentality with an adventure.  The end result is a visual component that births a visceral experience that’s sure to please.  My only negative impression, came during some of the beginning moments as the illustrator offered up a couple shaky renditions that left me a tad bit underwhelmed.

The Saviors #1 is a nice and also fun way to close out 2013, as this comic easily earns some praise and a recommendation.
