Superman/Wonder Woman #8 Review

Is this a crossover that warrants attention? Or should you treat it like a disease and ignore it? Read on to find out.

The official description from DC:

Continued from this month’s SUPERMAN: DOOMED #1! Wonder Woman must deal with what Superman is becoming. Will she have to slay her lover to save him?

Superman-Wonder Woman 8_Preview PageOne of the most difficult things in comics is taking something that’s familiar and attempting to re-craft it into a new narrative with additional details in order to build up a present threat that’s relevant and believable. And that’s exactly what this crossover is attempting to do, and thankfully, through the talent of this creative team it feels like it’s in the right hands.

The aptly named “Evolutions” penned by Charles Soule sees our big blue boy-scout in the throws of the Doomsday spores. He’s undergoing a change and it’s become noticeable by those around them, which leads us to this question: how far will our Goddess of War let this continue before she’s forced to put our hero down? It’s a tough parable to answer but through the work of the scribe and with a decent set of subtext formed at its back we see their deepening bond and the threat it represents. My one complaint is that the ending just happened too fast and needed more build up.

In the realm of the New 52 there are a handful of artists that I believe absolutely get the look and style, Tony Daniel is one of them. From his time on Justice League to this title he’s offered detailed renditions with a soft touch that never diminished the actions therein. His specific illustrations in regards to Wonder Woman are an instant highlight that fits within the limitations of the text. But when it comes to Doomsday/Superman, the infected creature looks more than a bit goofy. Still the colors by Tomeu Morey successfully complement the package from beginning to end.

Superman/Wonder Woman #8 is not ground breaking by any stretch, but it’s solid entertainment that moves this arc forward with enough positives to earn a recommendation from me.
