Starlight #4 Review

Can Duke and his young sidekick escape from Kingfisher’s grasp? Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

Duke and his young companion are getting deeper into Tantalus’ underground movement, doing everything they can to infiltrate the invaders and meeting some unlikely allies. It’s been 40 years since Duke last held a gun. Does he still have what it takes to drive out alien invaders and save Tantalus for a second time?

Starlight04_CoverBStarlight has proven to be an excellent addition to Millarworld with these first four issues being a joy to read. In this issue the story sees Duke and his young Tantalus friend try and escape Kingfisher’s prison, getting some much needed help from the Resistance.

Mark Millar continues to scribe an intriguing script as though Starlight may not be his most exciting series to date it has managed to grab my attention more than any other. A lot of that I feel is down to the terrific character depth and interaction with Duke’s personality and bravado sticking out. Millar also did a fabulous job of introducing the Resistance and along with the background he’s already established this gives a promising and intriguing step forward for the series. To top things off we also get a suspenseful cliffhanger to the issue and though I personally saw it coming early on in the issue it still gave an impactful close to the issue.

Goran Parlov‘s art continues to give an energetic and lighthearted tone that compliments the story perfectly. Unfortunately however the detail of his art isn’t as good as it’s been as though for the most part it’s fantastic there are a lot more rough patches than normal. Despite this Parlov still manages to captivate as the explosive prison escape along with the sleek layouts gave a dynamic flow to the story. He also adds to the drama and suspense of the story through his brilliant character expressions with them adding a lot of intensity and emotion to the character interactions.

Starlight continues to be a must read for any Millarworld fan with the introduction of the Resistance giving a intriguing and promising future for the series. Highly recommended.
