The Shadow: Midnight in Moscow #2 Review

With the main volume now over is this mini-series really worth collecting? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

The streets of New York run red with criminal blood, as the families of organized crime wage war on each other. The streets of London conceal an international conspiracy that may very well put an end to humanity. And Lamont Cranston, aka The Shadow, has retired. WTF!?!!

Layout 1Two issues in and I think we might be treading the waters of a must own. What’s being crafted in the confines of this release is something that’s been approached before but never handled in this way. Behold an end for a costumed crime fighter! Our prowling crusader for justice clings to hope as a potential life outside of one riddled with bullets bubbles to the surface.

Howard Chaykin pens the script and the man perhaps known best for his infamous Black Kiss franchise delivers the caliber work The Shadow requires. From the first page to the final panel he assaults the senses with an uncompromising body of text that take us through the elements of retirement. The time has come to tidy up and close those loose ends as our aged Lamont Cranston faces his assets before he and Margo Lane journey forth to new stomping grounds. The dialogue is thick but fluid as the author proves his skill.

If the written word was not enough to be impressed by Howard Chaykin will dazzle you with his crafty panels. Each one is layered in a unique style that’s all his own, but beyond individual renditions is an uncanny attention to background detail. His pencils cement not only the time period but the mood of the affair, and when you add in the colors done by Jesus Aburto fans will be left with visual eye candy that’s worth their attention.

The Shadow: Midnight in Moscow #2 is close to being perfect as this six-issue mini-series feels more like an event with each passing page. For readers who might be interested take a chance and enjoy because this comic book comes highly recommended.
