Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #5 Review

Will Mal and the Serenity crew make it out of the Alliance facility in one piece? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

Mal, Jayne, and River have infiltrated an Alliance facility that is home to more victims just like River—except, unlike her, they were never rescued. Now that Mal and the crew are in, the problem has become getting out—because Zoe still needs to be rescued and the Alliance is out for blood!

Serenity Leaves on the Wind #5 variantSerenity: Leaves on the Wind is nearing it’s conclusion with the penultimate issue seeing the crew of the Serenity take on the Alliance in an attempt to get one step closer to finding Zoe. The way that the series has developed as a whole has been really refreshing as though it’s not always hit the massive high notes it’s remained enjoyable. The energy and excitement in this particular issue was amazing as though the pace was a little muddled at time the energy was throw the roof.

Zack Whedon does a stellar job with this penultimate issue as besides a couple of minor annoyances it was excellent. The way that his script took the crew from a state of intense battle to a more tactical solution really appealed to me as though there were times during this transition that slightly confused me the drama and atmosphere it brought was worth it. Whedon also gives us amazing dialogue with it’s powerful tone adding a lot of tension to certain sequences.

Georges Jeanty never fails to amaze with his wonderful artwork. The charming and dynamic style of his work adds a lot to the story’s energy and vibe with the smooth layouts also giving definition. The detail of Jeanty’s art is also something to marvel and especially so in this issue, as the explosive action sequence gives a lot of intensity whilst also remaining beautiful. If this all wasn’t enough we also get spectacular colours from Laura Martin with her pallet adding a lot of tone and texture to the final imagery.

Serenity: Leaves on the Wind is unfortunately close to it’s finale but fortunately it continues to amaze in this penultimate issue which I highly recommend.
