Satellite Sam #6 Review

After six issues is this a sordid play that honestly needs to go on? Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

VOLUME TWO of SATELLITE SAM starts HERE: The son of the slain star of SATELLITE SAM steps into his father’s shoes in more ways than one while falling into bed with any woman that’ll have him. One of the stars of the show with a dubious past finds herself in the media spotlight—and trouble with the law. All while a sex and blackmail scandal threatens to envelop the show and the nascent LeMonde Television Network—unless someone stands up and saves the day.

SEX! DEATH! LIVE TV! Brought to you by MATT FRACTION (SEX CRIMINALS, Hawkeye) and HOWARD CHAYKIN (BLACK KISS, CENTURY WEST).

Satellite Sam 6_Preview Page 1I’m going to begin this by saying that when we saw who the creative team was going to be my interest was peaked. I’m invested in the tale and the players involved as this newest entry keeps the already positive momentum of the franchise going. So we still have a compelling tale that’s full of all the depravity one expects.

Matt Fraction continues to pen this sordid affair with the level of literary skill most have come to expect from this talent. He nails the characters and there’s enough forward progression to keep an audience but it just feels like more of the same. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because trust me most comics would be lucky if they carried themselves on the level that Satellite Sam currently enjoys.

The art done by Howard Chaykin continues to be a visual treat from the first page to the final panel. The legendary illustrator knows how to capture the nuances of the human experience but his real skill is his background designs. I have to say I am a tad bit underwhelmed by some of the facial expressions but not enough to take me out of this experience. In short: the visuals work just fine.

Satellite Sam #6 is may be the start of a new chapter but it feels familiar at the same time. Recommended.

  • + The story is still strong.
  • + The art continues to be striking.
  • - The plot stuck to its already accepted pattern.
  • - Honestly want a bigger cliffhanger than the one we got.
