Robotech/Voltron #4 Review

Is this destined to fail? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Bimonthly! Part 4 of 5. The mighty Super Dimension Fortress One has become the target of not just Khyron, but also King Lotor. Captain Gloval now finds the SDF-1 and its crew trapped in the conflict between the conquered world of Arus and the dark powers of the Drule Empire. Back on Earth, Commander Keith Kogane and the partially reassembled Voltron Force must venture away from the relative safety of Macross Island to search for their lost teammate Allura. A clue left by her late father Alfor may be the missing key to find their way back home.

Layout 1That’s right my fellow fanboys and fangirls it’s time for another crossover that probably never needed to happen but I’m glad it did. There’s something downright magical when you combine these two properties in a single arc as their iconic players interact in places far away from their given homes. And it’s through that tight narrative back and forth that this team capitalizes on both staple programs.

Tommy Yune and Bill Spangler tickled my fancy with a script that spoke directly to nostalgic followers of both Robotech and Voltron. We see our heroes interact in believable ways even if the script seems a tad bit too focused on specific tropes. The authors however do more than enough right to prepare the way for what should be a rousing finish as the text embraces happenstance, camp and just enough fun to make this adventure worthwhile.

There’s no denying the fact that Elmer Damaso and the Digital Art Chefs Team easily emulate the old school style featured in these iconic brands. Every singe page is adorned with familiarity so much so that it cements connection without making the whole of this outlandish yarn questionable.  The end result is a sturdy display that’s worth the price of admission.

Robotech/Voltron #4 is not  a perfect combination by any stretch. But for me, and my younger self, I react well to this. Especially because it’s something I’ve always wanted but never knew I needed. Recommended.
