Robin Rises: Omega (One-Shot) Review

How does Robin’s sarcophagus tie into Apokolips? Read on to find out.

The official description from DC Comics:

The hunt for Robin is over, and the battle joined! But Batman’s family feud with Ra’s al Ghul is about to erupt into something bigger when it’s interrupted by the forces of Apokolips! This epic story continues in this month’s BATMAN AND ROBIN #33!

RROvThe event that Batman and Robin has been building up to since Damian’s death in Batman Incorporated #8 has finally arrived as Batman teams up with Ra’s al Ghul and Frankenstein to face off against the army of Apokolips. With action throughout as well as a smooth and informative round-up of previous events the issue works as a brilliant introduction to Robin Rises.

Peter J. Tomasi delivers an emotional yet exciting issue with Apokolips’ entrance at the end of Batman and Ra’s al Ghul #32 getting some depth and resolve. Tomasi also does a great job of setting the stage for fans with a smooth yet thorough seven page recap into Damian’s life with the depth and continuity pleasing this long term fan. Despite all this I did find it to be one giant set-up towards Batman and Robin #33 as despite the thrill and excitement it could have probably have been just as entertaining in a regular sized format.

The man who introduced Damian visually, Andy Kubert handles the art on this oversized one-shot with his explosive panels being eye catching to say the least. The way that Kubert manages to portray drama and excitement is simply amazing with the layout also adding to the intensity. In addition to this he also manages to give emotional and at times quirky facial expressions. Rounding things off we get Jonathan Glapion‘s subtle inks and Brad Anderson‘s captivating colours.

Robin Rises: Omega proves to be a fabulous introduction the the highly anticipated story as though it felt like a huge set-up issue it was at least an exciting one. Highly recommended.
