Pathfinder: Goblins #3 Review

Adorable goblins that just want to read and to fight the good fight but are too dumb to do so, that sounds alright to me.

Here is the official description from Dynamite:

“In “To Read or Not to Read“, the pen is mightier than the sword, especially if you’re a goblin! Nothing strikes fear into a goblin’s heart like a good book, but one curious creature might well turn out to be the Shakespeare of his people … if he survives he experience. And in “The Way of The Goblin“, there’s a pack of goblins that have a new leader who may turn them into a real threat…that is, if they can even understand what he’s telling them to do. Well laid tactical plans turn soon into a chaos of screaming, burning, and bumbling goblins.”

So the latest installment of the series Pathfinder: Goblins, is split up into two different stories. I don’t want to ruin anything about them but they are awesome and hilarious. From the description, the first one is pretty summed up but it really doesn’t say how hilarious it actually was. I was a theater major in college and I, personally, loved it because it nods to Shakespeare. The second story, took me a second read to really get. It was kind of hard to understand but after I read it a second time I really enjoyed it.

Ron Marz and Ray Fawkes, both, do a  great job with their separate stories. To Read or Not to Read, Marz shows us what can happen when Goblins are given some intelligence and the result is fantastic. The humor that is brought in by Marz is sharp and very true to the character of Goblins. Ray Fawkes’s, The Way of The Goblin, does a great job of storytelling with in this one. I think that ability to show Goblins that are organized is not an easy task but he does it with such precision you actually begin to root for them.

The art in, both, stories are fun and playful. The feel of the Goblin series is very much a visually driven concept. You feel the comedy being played out through the illustrations and see how the artists add their own tones to each story. Again, not to spoil anything, you will really appreciate the way the smart Goblin looks in the first story.

Overall, this issue was very well done. It was smart, funny, and cute. I can’t wait to see what’s next in this world of Goblins. I give it a four out of five.
