Red Sonja #8 Review

Can this team continue to offer up a refreshing take on the storied property? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

The unstoppable warrior is honor-bound to continue on in a king’s bizarre quest to find and capture the greatest artisans of the world, whether they want to be found or not! In this unforgettable story, Sonja seeks the finest animal trainer in the world…except he’s trained them all for WAR, with only Sonja to stop them!

Red Sonja 8_Variant CoverThere are some comics that I cover for UTF, that make it hard to do my job. The reason that occurs is because I’m faced with a quality team that continues to turn out solid work. And that’s the issue I face with this book as, once again, fans are treated with another chapter that pushes our she-devil with a sword forward.

The text within these pages is what makes this into something that’s downright special. Gail Simone continues to plow away in her second arc as our scarlet haired heroine continues to trek onward on her quest. What makes the whole thing iconic however is the main character’s voice and sheer attitude, the results of which will surely cause a bit of a chuckle on more than one occasion. The overall tale is absolutely fun and engaging, even as the stakes behind it continue to be quite high in their own right.

The art on this title reminds me of when Stjepan Sejic took over Witchblade or when Cliff Chiang became the illustrator for Wonder Woman. There’s just certain people that seem tailor made for female action, and Walter Geovani is one of them. We’re given a superb array of panels that are detailed and vibrant as the visual component flows with believable life. Add in the color work done by Adriano Lucas and you have a great looking release.

Red Sonja #8 is exactly the high quality affair I want to read. It’s a near perfect vehicle for a protagonist that’s seen her share of relaunches and all I can say is kudos to the creative team! Highly recommended.
