Red Sonja #11 Review

Can our scarlet haired heroine face the latest obstacle in her narrative path? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Sonja’s epic quest to collect the world’s most gifted people races towards its climax, with the lives of a thousand innocent people at stake! The She-Devil chases a man who understands (and possibly controls) a dreadful power from the stars themselves.

Red Sonja 11_Variant CoverAs part of the review team for Unleash The Fanboy, I’m often given the opportunity to follow and delve deep into franchises I might ignore at my local comic shop. Well I’m here to tell everyone that to overlook this one would be a grievous mistake. Because this is a property that’s simply been renewed via the strength of a competent creative team that honestly held enough familiarity with their subject matter to yield a sturdy and versed interpretation of her lore.

Gail Simone continues to write an arc that calls upon the inner workings of Red Sonja and the outer strength that this devil carries in her nature. That’s the might of the written word, as our fearless adventurer comes face to face with a man that stands above the regurgitated foes or victims she’s familiar with. This text is where science and faith clash in a fitting field that left me positively floored. I couldn’t be happier with how the author used the established players in this environment, but some of the dialogue felt a bit robotic.

And once again the illustrations by Walter Geovani do more than enough to keep the visual side of this yarn on the same level as the plot it highlights. Details are kept in check while crafting a world that befits the time and place. The talent uses controlled pencil strokes to give a striking vision that never left me wanting for something more. To further cement the pictures Adriano Lucas, Carlos Lopez and Alex Guimaráes offer up a vibrant display of colors that are bound to please.

Red Sonja #11 is without a doubt another quality entry that could of easily been a misstep but it’s not. There were a few moments where I had some doubts, especially following an elongated introduction, but in the end the entire machine speedily forged something worthwhile. Through the strength a steady creative team, a historically relevant narrative and a thorough inspection of our heroine’s own psyche this one easily comes recommended.
